Data link layer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The data link layer is layer two of the seven-layer OSI model.
The data link layer is the layer of the model which ensures that data is transferred correctly between adjacent network nodes in a wide area network.
The data link layer provides the functional and procedural means to transfer data between network entities and to detect and possibly correct errors that may occur in the Physical layer.

 Encyclopedia: Data link layer
High-Level Data Link Control (HDLC) is a bit-oriented synchronous data link layer protocol developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
In telecommunication, Advanced Data Communication Control Procedures (or Protocol) (ADCCP) is a bit-oriented data link layer protocol used to provide point-to-point and point-to-multipoint transmission of data frames that contain error_control information.
Logical Link Control (LLC) is the upper portion of the data link layer of a local area network, as defined in IEEE 802.

HDLC - High Level Data Link Control   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
Data is transmitted in the data field, which can vary in length depending upon the protocol using the frame.
SNRM and SABM frames, for example, are used both to set up logical link between the primary and the secondary station and to inform the secondary station of the mode of operation to be used.
Prior to any kind of transmission (either between two stations connected by a point to point link or between a primary and secondary station a multidrop link) a logical connection between the two communication parties must be established.

The Data Link Layer   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
The main task of the data link layer is to take a raw transmission facility and transform it into a line that appears free of transmission errors in the network layer.
Another issue that arises in the data link layer (and most of the higher layers as well) is how to keep a fast transmitter from drowning a slow receiver in data.
The problem is that the acknowledgment frames for A to B traffic compete for the use of the line with data frames for the B to A traffic.

CCNA Study Notes - OSI - Data Link Layer
Different data link layer specifications define different network and protocol characteristics, including physical addressing, network topology, error notification, sequencing of frames, and flow control.
The Data Link layer is divided into two sublayer by the 802 standards: the Logical Link Control (LLC) and Media Access Control (MAC) sublayers.
The Data Link layer uses a calculated value called the CRC (Cyclic Redundancy Check) that's placed into the Data Link trailer that's added to the message frame before it's sent to the Physical layer.

 HDLC - High-level Data Link Control(HDLC),Link Access Procedure Balanced(LAPB) - X.25   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
If data is flowing in both directions (full duplex), the data frames themselves carry all the information required to ensure data integrity.
This means that data can continue to flow in situations where there may be long "turnaround" time lags without stopping to wait for an acknowledgement.
HDLC LAPB is the Link Layer (Level 2 of the OSI model) that is usually used by X.25, the ITU (previously called the CCITT) standard for Packet Switched Networks.

Though some local companies may advertise to provide data recovery services, be aware that they may only provide basic off-the-shelf software recoveries because walk-in clean rooms are very expensive investments.
For this reason, some companies offering data recovery services outsource their mechanical data recoveries (needing clean rooms) to one of three or four full-service providers like Data Recovery Link.
Other data recovery companies use us as their back-up recovery service when they are unsuccessful.

 Data-Link Switching (DLSw)
Granted units (the number of units that the sender has permission to send) are incremented with a flow-control indication (one of several possible indicators) from the receiver.
Transport utilization—If the link between two DLSw partners reaches a high level of utilization, the window size can be reduced to lower the level of link utilization and to prevent packet loss between the nodes.
This has the normal advantages of a reliable transport protocol, in which the data flow is monitored and retransmitted if any data is lost (sequence numbers and acks).
