Data marts became very popular in the late 1980s and have been the subject of much debate in the industry since their introduction.
Individual data marts are typically built for use by a single department or to meet the needs of a subject- oriented analytical projects, but most organizations will have multiple data marts in their business intelligence environment.
No matter where the data originally entered the enterprise’s data gathering functions, though, it has been obtained by the data mart only after being processed through a standardized set of functions which place the data in a central data warehouse that was used as the source of the data contained in the resulting data mart.

Building The Data Mart   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Although the concept of data marting, and the architectural model of combining a single warehouse and multiple marts into an enterprise-wide decision support environment, are now taken for granted by most DSS architects and system builders, at the time the article was published, the concept of marting was extremely controversial.
The data mart's primary mission is to extract the base data required by a knowledge worker community from the warehouse, transform the data, and load it into the local business model in a manner that facilitates high-performance response to end-user requests.
Data marting lets each constituency choose a toolset that is appropriate to its business team, and provides clear boundaries and interfaces with which these toolsets must conform.

Data Mart (Linktionary term)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
A data mart is a data warehouse for a single department or division of a company, as compared to a full-blown data warehouse, which attempts to store and make available all the data a company has available.
A data mart is subject specific and usually departmental, while a data warehouse is a repository for an entire enterprise's data.
Data marts are simpler to build and may take less than one year to build, while data warehouses are complex undertakings that may take over a year to build.

DBMS - August 1998 - Scoping Your Data Mart Implementation   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Scoping a data mart project ensures against the same type of catastrophe that can befall an enterprise data warehouse or other large technology delivery project, and failures to plan these projects are the stuff of corporate folklore.
Unlike its data warehouse brethren, a data martýs business case is solid before development begins, the user community is known beforehand and usually concentrated in one or two departments, and business managers have an application and often a specific front-end tool already in mind.
Where a data warehouse may cost millions or even tens of millions of dollars, thus permitting months of analysis and iterative requirements gathering, data marts are often expected to be up and running quickly.

Data mart - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The key difference is that the creation of a data mart is predicated on a specific, predefined need for a certain grouping and configuration of select data.
Performance: to offload the data mart to a separate computer for greater efficiency or to obviate the need to manage that workload on the centralized data warehouse.

 Data Mart Delivery Architecture
Extracted data is not in a dimensional form since the data warehouse is mostly relational.
The delivery mechanism of data mart can be as simple as an FTP of flat file (in case of Excel format) or as sophisticated as the use of middleware that will transport data across the network and invoke the loader for the target database.
Marts can be maintained with or without the production support staff since it is easy to resend newly built marts from the output staging layer.

In the Kimball architecture, the data mart in a data warehouse is the beginning, not the end.

Breuer & Co. - Data Mart
The Data Mart feature provides a query/reporting capability allowing users to instantly obtain answers to important, simple questions that operational databases and their report writers typically can't provide on an ad-hoc basis.
The data mart is comprised of a database containing all of the accounting system information; plus special summary and "value-added" data to allow for quick and simple querying.
Data from these systems can either be viewed in-situ or can be imported directly into the datamart.

DBAzine.com: ETL for the “Unstructured” Data Mart   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Typically in the world of iterative data, each data value is explicitly related to its meaning, by way of its assignment to a specific named column or field.
The transformation of narrative data to iterative data is in large part the execution of educated guesses, the outcome of which is the deduction of data-metadata assignments.
A “narrative data mart” can be of considerable value to any enterprise in which a significant percentage of data of interest appears in narrative or “unstructured” form — that is, just about any enterprise.

IBM Redbooks | Data Mart Consolidation: Getting Control of Your Enterprise Information
Originally data marts were built for many different reasons, such as departmental or organizational control, faster query response times, easier and faster to design and build, and fast payback.
However, data marts did not always provide the best solution when it came to viewing the business enterprise as a whole.
In many cases the data marts led to the creation of departmental or organizational data silos (non-integrated sources of data).
