Data Processor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
In data processing, a Data Processor or Data Processing System is a system which processes data which has been captured and encoded in a format recognizable by the Data Processing System or has been created and stored by another aspect of the Data Processing System.
A data processor is a specialized form of an information processing system.
Its chief difference is that the inputs to a data processing system are converted from data into information by a process called encoding prior to being processed and as a result, must run the processed data through a decoding process before the information can be output from the system.

Data processing -- Facts, Info, and Encyclopedia article   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Data processing is any (A natural prolongation or projection from a part of an organism either animal or plant) process that converts (A collection of facts from which conclusions may be drawn) data into (A message received and understood) information.
In this context (A collection of facts from which conclusions may be drawn) data is defined as a collection of (A concept of quantity derived from zero and units) numbers or (A written symbol that is used to represent speech) characters that represent a (The act or process of measuring) measurement from the real world.
More generally, the term data processing can apply to any process that converts data from one format to another, although data (The act of changing from one use or function or purpose to another) conversion would be the more logical and correct term.

Electronic data processing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Data input required intermediate processing via punched paper tape or card and separate input to computers, usually for overnight processing.
Data storage was strictly serial on magnetic tape: the use of data storage within readily accessible memory was not cost-effective.
As with other industrial processes commercial IT has moved in all respects from a bespoke, craft-based industry where the product was tailored to fit the customer; to multi-use components taken off the shelf to find the best-fit in any situation.

Distribution of the OPUS Data Processing System
OPUS is a dynamic, event-driven, distributed processing system that provides an environment designed to handle a large number of observations processed through many steps across a network of computers (Rose 1998).
In this model processes do not communicate with one another, but simply read and write to a common `flboard' instead of having a single `controller' process which must be continuously aware of the activity of other processes in the system (Nii 1989).
Processes (or scripts) can be triggered in three ways: the most common is to allow the completion of one or more previous pipeline steps to act as the process trigger.
