Atmospheric CO2 and isotopic data, including the high CO2 growth rate measured during 1998, are interpreted in terms of varying terrestrial and oceanic sources and sinks of CO2 in broad latitudinal zones.
First, we are able now, with some confidence, to compute the air-sea flux of CO2 across the air-sea interface directly on a global basis thanks to the compilation of a large data base of observations of the air-sea difference in the partial pressure of CO2 [Takahashi et al., 1999].
Sources and sinks of atmospheric carbon dioxide are mediated by processes at diverse spatial and temporal scales, involving interactions between soils, the atmosphere, surface oceans, deep oceans, terrestrial biota, and marine biota.

It can also be an assembly, consisting of parts of two data terminal equipments (DTEs) and the interconnecting data circuit, that is controlled by a link protocol enabling data to be transferred from a data source to a data sink.

Although the US data suggest that the land sink there is driven primarily by land-use history and not fertilization by atmospheric CO or atmospheric nitrogen deposition, it is not clear if the same findings hold true for other land regions.
The estimate of the land sink in the coterminous US discussed previously gives a total carbon sink that is on the low side but within the uncertainty of what is implied by atmospheric inversions.
Despite the development of innovative new methods to measure in situ fluxes (as seen on the cover and as described at http://www.as.harvard.edu/chemistry/hf) and detailed distributions of atmospheric CO from aircraft, it continues to be difficult to close the gap between lower in situ estimates and the large sinks inferred from the models.

Absorption of Carbon Dioxide from the Atmosphere
The assumption that the biomass sink is proportional to the CO2 concentration, is a good one as it fits very well with the massive amount of empirical data we have on the CO2 fertilization effect.
The CO2 accumulation is the integral of the seasonal fluctuations, and therefore a true model of the input and sink mechanisms would predict the seasonal variations: the models of Dietze and Ahlbeck don't predict the seasonal variations (and nor do any other models).
Even if the IPCC modeling of the sink to the ocean bulk as a second-order diffusion process would be correct, their modeling of the biosphere as "backmixed" is so over-simplified that it is stupid.

Figure 4.1.  North American terrestrial carbon sink: Contribution of increasing CO2 and climate to carbon storage by ecosystems in the United States
The best estimates of the total sink from inventory data are about three times larger, suggesting that processes such as regrowth on abandoned agricultural land or in forests harvested before 1980 have effects as large as or larger than the direct effects of CO and climate.
These results were part of the Vegetation/Ecosystem Modeling and Analysis Project (VEMAP) aimed at understanding the contribution of ecosystem physiological mechanisms to terrestrial sinks in the conterminous United States.
The effects of increasing carbon dioxide and climate on net carbon storage in terrestrial ecosystems of the conterminous United States were modeled using new, detailed historical climate information from the NOAA Historical Climate Network database.

This leads to four combinations (two models with two prescribed oceanic sink patterns) to interpret the atmospheric data in terms of land sources and sinks.
Annual average CO sources and sinks are deduced separately for three areas: North America, Northern Eurasia, and the rest of the land area of the world.
Because atmospheric transport is generally much faster in the east-west than in the north-south direction the spatial pattern that results from sources and sinks is mostly north-south, and is "smeared out" in the east-west direction.

Data terminal equipment - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A DTE is the functional unit of a data station that serves as a data source or a data sink and provides for the data communication control function to be performed in accordance with link protocol.
DTE is an abbreviation for Data Terminal Equipment, and refers to an end instrument that converts user information into signals for transmission, or reconverts the received signals into user information.
The data terminal equipment (DTE) may be a single piece of equipment or an interconnected subsystem of multiple pieces of equipment that perform all the required functions necessary to permit users to communicate.

According to Miller, atmospheric scientists are fairly certain that a large carbon dioxide “sink” occurs in the terrestrial Northern Hemisphere, although there’s a great deal of contention as to whether it’s being absorbed in North America or in parts of northern China and Siberia.
Miller and his colleagues hope their data will enable them to produce an accurate picture of the locations and amounts of carbon dioxide that are being absorbed from the Earth’s atmosphere.
Still, scientists are uncertain as to whether carbon dioxide is being absorbed by the soil or, as in the case of Brazil, by large forested areas.

With the isochronous streams in 1394, the destination device acting as the sink for the stream plug does not perform local buffering and simply renders the data stream as it is received from the network.
The new 1394b data encoding improvements are based on the same "8B10B" codes (a way to encode the data so that it is easier to send it over longer distances) used by Fibre Channel and Gigabit Ethernet.
However, the 1394b encoding and decoding processes are more complicated for the chip makers to implement and require the logic and a Phase Locked Loop (PLL) to do the more complex 1394b clock and data recovery from the 8B/10B encoded stream (the legacy 1394a Data/Strobe encoding is simpler).
