  Data mining - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Although it is usually used in relation to analysis of data, data mining, like artificial intelligence, is an umbrella term and is used with varied meaning in a wide range of contexts.
Data mining involves the process of analysing data to show patterns or relationships; sorting through large amounts of data; and picking out pieces of relative information or patterns that occur e.g., picking out statistical information from some data.
Used in the technical context of data warehousing and analysis, the term "data mining" is neutral.

 Encyclopedia :: encyclopedia : Mining
Mining is the extraction of valuable minerals or other geological materials from the earth, usually (but not always) from an ore body, vein, or (coal) seam.
Another early mining operation was the turquoise mine operated by the ancient Egyptians at Wady Maghareh on the Sinai Peninsula.
Turquoise was also mined in pre-Columbian America in the Cerillos Mining District in New Mexico, where a mass of rock 200 feet (60 m) in depth and 300 feet (90 m) in width was removed with stone tools; the mine dump covers 20 acres (81,000 m²).

Data mining, also known as knowledge-discovery in databases (KDD), is the practice of automatically searching large stores of data for patterns.
Data warehouses were beginning to be used for storage of data.
Data Mining thus arose as a response to challenges faced by the database community in dealing with massive amounts of data, application of statistical analysis to data and application of search techniques from Artificial Intelligence to these problems.

Raw data is a relative term; data processing commonly occurs by stages, and the "processed data" from one stage may be considered the "raw data" of the next.
Data mining can be defined as "The nontrivial extraction of implicit, previously unknown, and potentially useful information from data" 1 and "The science of extracting useful information from large data sets or databases" 2.

Error correction in the information processing of a stream of data.
In philosophy and systems theory, basic processes, or logical homologies as they were termed by Ludwig von Bertalanffy, are unifying principles which operate in many different systemic contexts.
In SSADM a process is a part of a data flow diagram, and represents an action performed on the data.
