Data type - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A data type is a constraint placed upon the interpretation of data in a type system in computer programming.
Common types of data in programming languages include primitive types (such as integers, floating point numbers or characters), tuples, records, algebraic data types, abstract data types, reference types, classes and function types.
The smallest addressable unit of data is a group of bits called a byte (usually an octet, which is 8 bits).

Visual Studio Magazine - Getting Started - Type Your Data Wisely   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Data types are called primitive types in the VB.NET language specification and simple types in the C# language specification.
Data types in the CLS include four integers, two floating points, Decimal, DateTime, Char, String, and Boolean (for a summary of these data types and suggestions for when to use each one, see Table 1).
Unsigned integers are an example of a data type for which C# defines operators and aliases, and VB.NET doesn't (because it discourages using types beyond the CLS).

Inprise Entera 4.2 Reference: Data type information   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
This chapter describes data types which should be used in your IDL file.
IDL supports three types of arrays: fixed, conformant, and varying, as well as arrays that are conformant and varying.
The use of data types is more strict for PowerBuilder when used with Entera than it is for C. Because static strings do not exist in PowerBuilder, only variable size arrays are used.

Primitive Data Types (The Java™ Tutorials > Learning the Java Language > Language Basics)
A variable's data type determines the values it may contain, plus the operations that may be performed on it.
data type can be useful for saving memory in large arrays, where the memory savings actually matters.
class is not technically a primitive data type, but considering the special support given to it by the language, you'll probably tend to think of it as such.

NetCDF User's Guide for C: Data
Access to data is direct, which means you can access a small subset of data from a large dataset efficiently, without first accessing all the data that precedes it.
Reading and writing data by specifying a variable, instead of a position in a file, makes data access independent of how many other variables are in the dataset, making programs immune to data format changes that involve adding more variables to the data.
If the type is numeric, however, the netCDF library allows you to access the variable data as a different type and provides automatic conversion between the numeric data in memory and the data in the netCDF variable.

 2 AVS/Express Field data type
For example, a geometry is one type of unstructured mesh where the nodes are connected together in polygon or polytriangle cells that form the surface of an object.
AVS/Express field data is classified into different types, according to the type of mesh and the associated specification of computational-to-physical space mapping used.
The primitive data type of all the data values: must be one of byte, integer, single, or double.

Use the smallint data type to store numbers in the range from -32,768 through 32,767 only (requires 2 bytes of storage per value), and the tinyint data type to store numbers in the range from 0 through 255 only (requires 1 byte of storage per value).
The table data type can be used only to define local variables of type table or the return value of a user-defined function.
Allows a user-defined data type, product_code, for example, that is based on the char data type and defined as two uppercase letters followed by a five-digit supplier number.

SQL Server Database Datatype Performance Tuning Tips
Numeric data types generally require less space to hold the same numeric value as does a character data type.
The bigint data type uses 8 bytes of memory verses 4 bytes for the int data type.
From a performance perspective, it is more efficient to use a data type that uses less space.

C Data types   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
C has a concept of 'data types' which are used to define a variable before its use.
The definition of a variable will assign storage for the variable and define the type of data that will be held in the location.
You can find out how much storage is allocated to a data type by using the sizeof operator.

 Integral data type (Linux Reviews)
The value of a datum with an integral type is the mathematical integer that it corresponds to.
A Boolean or Flag type is a type which can represent only two values: 0 and 1, usually identified with false and true respectively.
This type can be stored in memory using a single bit, but is often given a full byte for convenience of addressing and speed of access.

Those data that are derived from the analysis or treatment of primary data such as secondary structures, hydrophobicity plots, and domains are stored in secondary databases.

 Sensor Data Type Developers Guide
Once the data has made it to the server side, it is decoded from its String representation and stored as an entry in the appropriate SensorData instance for the type of data and the day on which the data was generated.
The purpose of the type and converter attributes is to enable the SDT mechanism to automatically convert the default String representation of the entry attribute into a Java class instance.
In this case, the type attribute value of "java.util.Date" tells the SDT mechanism to provide an additional representation for tstamp values beyond their String representation, and this representation will be as a Date instance.

Choose SQL Server 2000 Data Types
User-defined data types provide a mechanism for applying a name to a data type that is more descriptive of the types of values to be held in the object.
The user-defined data types are based on the system data types and can be used to predefine several attributes of a column, such as its data type, length, and whether it supports NULL values.
The columns with tinyint data type use only one byte to store their values, in comparison with two bytes, four bytes and eight bytes used to store the columns with smallint, int and bigint data types accordingly.

Microsoft Acces Fields and DataTypes | Database Solutions for Microsoft Access | databasedev.co.uk
Microsoft Access database fields are created by entering a field name and a field data type in each row of the field entry area of the database table window.
After you enter each field's name and data type, you can specify how each field is used by entering properties in the property area.
For numeric data types, the field size enables you to further define the type of number, which in turn determines the storage size.

xml Data Type   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
The xml data type is a built-in data type in SQL Server and is somewhat similar to other built-in types such as int and varchar.
As with other built-in types, you can use the xml data type as a column type when you create a table as a variable type, a parameter type, a function-return type, or in CAST and CONVERT.
Also, if you are changing the type of the column from string to typed xml, the documents in the column are validated against the specified XSD schemas.

Using data from statistical publications, such as the Annual Statistical Supplement and Income of the Population 55 or Older, the chartbooks present important information about the people served by the Social Security Administration's programs and the benefits they receive.
The data describe the characteristics of beneficiaries—for example, age, sex, race and ethnicity, income, and type of disability—and the type of benefits they receive (retired-worker, survivors, disabled-worker benefits, and so on).
The data are also presented by state and, in some reports, by county or congressional district.
