Information visualisation (InfoVis) is a relatively new discipline but already indispensable as a provider of tools for accessing and managing large (and rapidly growing) information spaces such as the Web and (distributed) corporate databases.
Visualisation frequently deals with subsets of data which are selected on users' demand in an unforeseeable sequence.
Data mining and information retrieval, as well as search within visualisation meta data will be of great importance within traditional SciVis application areas such as engineering.

Readings in Information Visualisation: Using Vision to Think (Morgan Kaufmann Series in Interactive Technologies) - Books @ UK's MacLinks.net Apple Store
In fact the latter point is a flaw in much of the recent revival of data visualisation work (or the visualisation of highly structured data if you want a full affectation).
The one redeeeming feature of this book is that it has a section on the visualisation of scientific data, which has been largely the meat and potatoes of data visualisation companies for over twenty years.
Now any program with a slider bar is rushing over to the visualisation camp with a vengenace.

 What is Information Visualisation?
Information Visualisation, as the set-up of a mental image from information distilled from data and from the finding of the underlying patterns in information, strongly influences the formation of knowledge.
So I’ve been bold enough to define Information Visualisation as the “Process of knowledge internalisation by the perception of information” or, if you want, by means of elaborating the data.
Information resides in the elaboration of data, the raw signals that can be gathered about objects or phenomena, in order to build knowledge.

As the term implies, information visualisation is all about making data visible—or, more precisely, the patterns that are hidden in the data.
More and more data are kept in a “structured” way (ie, in a format that can easily be digested by visualisation programs) or can be converted into such a format by special software tools.
Information visualisation is becoming more widespread—particularly in corporations, as part of enterprise-software packages.

 EVA
Information Visualisation is a new research area that focuses on the use of visualisation techniques to help people understand and analyse data.
Information visualisation on the other hand, uses graphic images to represent abstract, non-physically based data.
Some disadvantages of information visualisation systems arise from the fact that visualisations are not as natural or easy to understand, requiring learning time from the user and for in some cases the visualisation does not offer a complete view of the data set.

Graph Visualisation and Navigation in Information Visualisation
Information visualisation can be defined as the visualisation and navigation of abstract data structures.
In contrast, information visualisation looks at abstract data structures such as computer program structures, database query results, hypermedia structures, or organisational charts.
Information visualisation has specific requirements, which means that this survey approaches the results of traditional graph drawing from a different perspective than the traditional surveys; as such it is a useful complementary survey to those.

Information structures that can be suitably stored include RDF (Resource Description Framework) statements, XML documents, and software structure such as static class graphs and inherritance hierarchies.

 InfoVis 2003 Symposium
Information visualization centers around helping people explore or explain data that is not inherently spatial, such as that from the domains of bioinformatics, data mining and databases, finance and commerce, telecommunications and networking, information retrieval from large text corpora, software, and computer-supported cooperative work (CSCW).
The papers deadline has been extended to match the Vis 03 split deadline: title and abstract is due 31 March, full paper is due 10 April.
This year, the Symposium introduced a design contest to help initiate the development of benchmarks for the field and to promote more evaluation within the community.

A clinical interface for freehand 3D ultrasound - data acquisition
Visualisation usually proceeds by first resampling the data onto a regular voxel array, then slicing through the voxel array to generate reslice images.
Freehand three-dimensional ultrasound is a technique for acquiring 3D ultrasound data using a conventional 2D ultrasound machine with a magnetic position sensing device to record the path of the probe during the scan.
One of the major clinical advantages of recording ultrasound scans in this way is the ability to visualise arbitrary slices through the 3D data set, leading to diagnostically useful images which would have been impossible to obtain using conventional 2D ultrasound.

So if information visualisation is an appropriate solution to a design problem, the data is there, and the client and stakeholders are convinced of its value, how are designers to proceed?
Information visualisation taps into these powerful cognitive skills in ways that textual and numerical information cannot.
Yet information visualisation is not well served by tools that support these challenges: designers find that they have to custom-create or re-combine tools for anything other than simple interfaces.
