  Datassette - C64-Wiki
The datassette is Commodore's fancy name for a modified cassette tape recorder for use as a data medium; a data-cassette recorder.
The datassette has its own cable permanently attached to it, carrying both data and the power needed for the unit.
The datassette accepts standard cassette tapes, and a 90-minutes tape (45 minutes on each side) will hold on the order of 150 kilobytes on each side if no compression or fast loader is used.

Datassette - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Datassette contained built-in A/D converters and audio filters to convert the computer's digital information into analog sound and vice versa (much like a modem does over a telephone line).
In Europe, the Datassette was the medium of choice for several years after its launch, although floppy disk drives were generally available.
The Datassette was a very slow and fairly unreliable medium (the latter caused by the sensitivity of the encoded analog signal to disturbances by magnetic fields and tape failure).

The socalled 'Datassette' is the cheapest mass storage device for nearly all Commodore machines (PET2001, VIC-20, C64, C128).
The Datassette was introduced with the PET series (where it was built into the PET's case) and except for the look, never changed dramatically.
For these machines, Commodore made the 1531, which is a standard 1530 in a fl (or charcoal gray) case and equipped with the appropriate connector.

In Europe, the Datassette was the medium of choice for several years after its launch, although disk drives were available.
In the US, however, disk drives quickly outshadowed the Datassette, the Commodore 64 being the first home computer to popularize the medium and make it affordable – albeit still expensive (roughly 10 × the price of a Datassette).

I have a Commodore 64 with a Datassette and have been experiencing LOAD errors when trying to load data from a cassette that has data stored on both sides.
It sounds as if the record head on your Datassette could be out of alignment.
This would cause it to read part of the "other side" (actually a second track running in the opposite direction) instead of the proper track.

The 1581 uses one serial line for burst mode (128 mode only) that the C64 doesn't support, and that line is also used by the datassette for its read function.
Note that this problem doesn't happen with a 1571 or on a C128 (64 or 128 modes) with a 1581 and datassette connected.
If it is necessary to use a datassette with a 1581 on a C64, one workaround would be to cut the computers \SRQ line to the serial port (it's never used anyway), or make up a special serial cable with that line disconnected.
