  datis
There are only a few ancient texts about the Mede Datis, who must have been one of the most important generals in the Achaemenid empire in the first quarter of the fifth century BCE.
He does not mention the name Datis, but we know that he was present: in 495, he captured Rhodes, the town and island that guard the entrance of the Aegean Sea.
This makes it also likely that Datis was the commander of the Persian armada during the naval battle off Lade (pictures) on 20 October 494, which marked the beginning of the siege of Miletus.

 DATIS
According to Pliny (Naturalis Historia 35.57), the leaders of both Greeks and Persians, including Datis, were portrayed in a painting of the battle at Marathon (by Phidias' brother or nephew Panaenus?) in the so-called "painted hall" at Athens.
Datis and his forces, having achieved nothing on the Greek mainland and having taken only the Cyclades, returned to Asia (Herodotus, 6.116, 6.118.1-3).
It is certainly in harmony with Datis' apparent efforts to speak Greek, though rather haltingly, so that Greek datismo‚s became a kind of synonym for "barbarism." A similar allusion is found in the proverbial expression "Datis' song" (toà Da‚tidos me‚los; Aristophanes, Pax 289; cf.

Datis embarked his forces in the fleet that awaited them; and coasting along the shores of Asia Minor till he was off Samos, he thence sailed due westward through the AEgean Sea for Greece, taking the islands in his way.
Flushed with success, and with half his mission thus accomplished, Datis reimbarked his troops, and crossing the little channel that separates Euboea from the mainland, he encamped his troops on the Attic coast at Marathon, drawing up his galleys on the shelving beach, as was the custom with the navies of antiquity.
But, in truth, whatever amount of cavalry we suppose Datis to have had with him on the day of Marathon, their inaction in the battle is intelligible, if we believe the attack of the Athenian spearmen to have been as sudden as it was rapid.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Jordanus de Nemore
Emile Chasles, the geometrician, concluded from a study of the "Algorismus Jordani" that its author lived not later than the twelfth century.
In the fourteenth century the English Dominican Nicolas Triveth, in a chronicle of his order, attributed the "De ponderibus Jordani" and the "De lineis datis Jordani" to Jordanus Saxo, who, in 1222, succeeded St. Dominic as master general of the Friars Preachers.
Since then, the identity of Jordanus Saxo with Jordanus Nemorarius has been accepted by a great many authors; it seems difficult to maintain this opinion, however, as the Dominican superior general never adds de Nemore to his name, and the mathematician never calls himself Saxo.
