The Datsuns - The Datsuns: Silent Uproar
If you asked the Datsuns what was going to be the next big thing in the rock scene the answer would undeniably be "guitars." This debut stateside release from V2 Records is chalk full of big guitar riffs, swaggering solos, and a good amount of screeching interludes.
This is the kind of music that incites throngs of people to throw their devil signs in the air, bang their sweaty long hair to the rythmn, and throw themselves back when the full frontal assault of the solo kicks in.
The Datsuns are the AC/DC of the 2000's generation, minus the incessant and non-so-subtle ridiculous sexual references.

The Datsuns got swept onto the cover of the NME by 2002's garage-rock revival; in their defense, they had been stuck playing their own garages for six years by the time that New Wave of Three Chords arrived.
I had heard about The Datsuns, and I'd gotten a whiff of a lot of the silly garage rock "movement" that engulfed their arrival, and I didn't really expect them to be the real deal.

Having played together for several years now, New Zealand's The Datsuns got their big break last year, when UK's fickle music press decided they needed a new band to satisfy their readers' unstoppable hunger for retro rawk.
The Datsuns like their music hairy and beefy, with screeched vocals, barrages of riffs and, in the words of those older than you and I, some "fiery thunder."
It's the sub-standard quality of their songwriting, the uninspired performances on here and the fundamental lack of willingness to stretch beyond the safe confines of their older brothers' record collections.

About six and a half years into their career as a band, The Datsuns were thrust into the white-hot spotlight of critical acclaim.
This despite the fact that the quartet of long-haired New Zealanders continued to mine an array of deeply unfashionable influences -- AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Kiss, Deep Purple, T. Rex and Sweet -- and bludgeon its live audiences with an unholy loud blast of straight-up, irony-free rock energy.
We recently caught up with guitarist Christian Datsun to talk about his band's meteoric rise, why regular people like hard rock more than critics, what you're missing if you dismiss glam out of hand, and how to sneak a song called "Motherfucker from Hell" onto the radio.
