The Datsun PL-510 (from 1968 to 1973) has often been called the poor-man's BMW, and many people believe that the 510's design was inspired by old 70's BMWs (particularly the BMW 2002) with their round lights and box-shaped bodies.
The Datsun 510 released to the US market came originally with the carbureted 1.6L L-Series motor, 96 horse power, front disc brakes, 4-wheel independent suspension, rear wheel drive, and either a 4-speed manual or a 3-speed automatic transmission, and both the 4-door, 2-door, and wagon models.
This allowed the Datsun 510 to be easily upgraded from the 1.6L engine to the 2.0L L20b motor, and to go from the 4-speed manual transmission to the more versitile 5-speed transmissions made available for the later Datsun Z-cars.

The Datsun 510 was introduced in 1968 as a direct competition for the BMW 1600.
The 510 Station Wagon was discontinued after the 1972 model tear, and the sedan was discontinued in 1973.
The 510 was given a slight "facelift" in 1980, in which the 2-door Hatchback was replaced by a 5-door HB, the grille was redesigned, the round headlamps were replaced with square ones, and the dashboard was rearranged.

 Datsun 510 Race Setup
Datsun had purchased a production line license for the A40 and used this for the basis for most of their cars up until 1963.
The 510 was introduced in late 1967 and arrived in America in the fall of 1968 where it was an immediate hit.
It would be difficult for the 510 to be based on a 2002 as the 510 hit market about a year before the 2002 (the 510 and 2002 came to the U.S. at about the same time).

As the 510 series came on the market, Datsun introduced a series of qualities that appealed strongly to American buyers so much so that its four-door sedans and station wagons jointly sold more than 3000,000 units over a five-year span.
The 510 Datsun sedan, suitably modified, soon proved to be a successful racing car participating in Trans Am racing and in SCCA amateur sports car racing.
It was a source of such great pride to Nissan-USA, that in August 1971 a 510 was selected as the official pace car for the California 500 at the Ontario Motor Speedway.

The Datsun 1200 4-door sedan, 2-door coupe, 4-door wagon and 2-door ute were sold in Australia from 1970 to 1973 (the ute was sold until 1985).

The new 280ZX was a lackluster sedan in GT clothing, and although most sports car enthusiasts hated it, it sold well to those who would rather look sporty than be sporty.
