  Geodetic Datum Overview
Geodetic datums define the size and shape of the earth and the origin and orientation of the coordinate systems used to map the earth.
Datums have evolved from those describing a spherical earth to ellipsoidal models derived from years of satellite measurements.
The diversity of datums in use today and the technological advancements that have made possible global positioning measurements with sub-meter accuracies requires careful datum selection and careful conversion between coordinates in different datums.

A Vertical Datum is used to fix a position in the vertical direction, up and down the Z axis.
Australia's vertical datum is the Australian Height Datum [AHD] which approximates mean sea level and was determined by monitoring tide gauges around the Australian coastline.
A horizontal datum is used to fix a position in the X and Y directions.

UTM, WGS84. Convert coordinates between latitude/longitude and easting/northing - Franson CoordTrans
Every datum available in the database and the datums you create can be exported so that it can be imported later or on another machine.
If a datum being imported already exists in the database you are given the option to overwrite the existing datum if it differs from the one being imported.
If you wish your datum(s) to be accessible in another region, just drag the datum(s) from the datum list and drop it/them on the region in which it should be accessible.

In surveying and geodesy, a datum is a reference point on the earth's surface against which position measurements are made, and an associated model of the shape of the earth for computing positions.
The WGS84 datum, which is almost identical to the NAD83 datum used in North America, is a common standard datum and the default for coordinates displayed in most commercial GPS units.
Vertical datums are either tidal, based on sea levels, or geodetic, based on the same ellipsoid models of the earth used for computing horizontal datums.

Datums are used to establish a plane of reference.
When you select a datum plane or planar face, the sketch is aligned with the plane and sketch geometry is created on the plane.
If another datum plane is selected, select the plane's origin or middle-click to locate it at the origin of the selected datum plane.

C5: Datum   (Site not responding. Last check: )
One important distinction is the datum's ability to write itself, which relate it to the concept of "unlimited semiosis" in which the Peircean interpretant, in the mind of the interpreter, repeatedly becomes a sign.
One way of studying the datum is to analyze it in specific topographies of agencies and attributes; agencies and attributes as a proposed system to "capture" the denotative power of the datum.
The datum's ability to be twofold: language and object, creates a possibility for the datum to somehow span the unbridgeable gap between language and objects.

NOAA National Ocean Service Education: Geodesy
At its most basic level of definition, the horizontal datum is a collection of specific points on the Earth that have been identified according to their precise northerly or southerly location (latitude) and easterly or westerly location (longitude) (National Geodetic Survey, 1986).
To create the horizontal datum, or network of horizontal positions, surveyors marked each of the positions they had identified, typically with a brass, bronze, or aluminum disk or monument.
This datum was used extensively during the next 60 years as the primary reference for horizontal positioning.

 Reference Datum
So, to avoid these problems, a reference datum is needed that represents the same surface or elevation at all points on the earth and that remains constant over time.
An example of a datum that could be used for the earth is a sphere with a radius equal to the average radius of the earth.
By using an oblate ellipsoid as a datum for the earth we have a shape that approximates the shape of the earth fairly well and provides a datum to which points all over the earth's surface can be referenced (hence the term 'reference datum').

Datum targets   (Site not responding. Last check: )
A point datum target is shown as 'X", a line datum target is shown as a phantom line, and an area datum target is shown as an area or a diameter on the part drawing.
From each datum target, a leader line attaches to a circle, which is the datum target symbol (Figure 6).
The line connecting the datum target and the datum target symbol can be solid or hidden type, meaning the datum targets are either on the visible surface or on the hidden surface.

Datum precedence rule   (Site not responding. Last check: )
According to this rule, the minimum number of point of contacts for the primary datum as 3, the secondary datum as 2, and tertiary datum as 1.
What it all means that, if the datum features are not perfectly flat and square to each other, then the datum plane for the primary datum will be determined by three high points of the surface.
Depending on the squareness and flatness of the datum feature, the worst case scenario is 2-point contact with the perfectly squared and flat simulated datum plane.

Custom Datums   (Site not responding. Last check: )
A datum is an ellipsoid that is combined with an offset of the ellipsoid relative to the Earth's center (defined as the center of the WGS84 datum).
tags specify the offsets of the datum center along the X, Y and Z axis with respect to the center of WGS84, and are optional.
That is, a scale adjustment of 1 means that the scale of the datum is 1.000001 that of WGS84.

 Old Datum Timing
The company was started after new management of Datum’s Timing Test and Measurement Division decided to discontinue service on all instruments that had been out of production for ten years or more.
The driving desire behind O.D.T. was to provide continuing service to all of Datum’s long-term customers for whom the company had designed and built instruments customized to their specific requirements for use as the timing synchronization and distribution heart of larger, more extensive data acquisition systems.
This is especially true when, in many cases, this would require the replacement of one custom-built instrument with one or more “off the shelf” instruments, often necessitating extensive and expensive changes to the existing system.

 Datums--Who Needs 'Em Anyway?
A datum defines the position of the spheroid relative to the center of the earth.
The resulting datums were typically limited in extent and were tied to an origin point on the earth's surface.
This spheroid and its associated datums define the earth's shape by measuring and triangulating from an outside perspective and use the mass center of the earth as an absolute origin.

The North American Datum of 1927 (NAD 27) is "The horizontal control datum for the United States that (was) defined by (a) location and azimuth on the Clarke spheroid of 1866, with origin at (the survey station) Meades Ranch."...
The datum is defined by the observed heights of mean sea level at the 26 tide gauges and by the set of elevations of all bench marks resulting from the adjustment.
The North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD 88) is the vertical control datum established in 1991 by the minimum-constraint adjustment of the Canadian-Mexican- U.S. leveling observations.
