Charles-François Daubigny (Paris, February 15, 1817 – February 19, 1878 in Paris) was one of the painters of the Barbizon school, and is considered an important precursor of Impressionism.
Daubigny was born in a family of painters and was taught the art by his father Edmond François Daubigny and his uncle, miniaturist Pierre Daubigny.
Daubigny's finest pictures were painted between 1864 and 1874, and these for the most part consist of carefully completed landscapes with trees, river and a few ducks.

By 1837 Daubigny had become famous as a river and landscape painter, although he had been devoting himself as well to drawing in fl-and-white, to etching, wood engraving, and lithography.
In 1855 his picture, Lock at Optevoz, now in the Louvre, was purchased by the state; four years later Daubigny was created knight of the Legion of Honor, and in 1874 he was promoted to bean officer.

He was a pupil of his father Edmé-François Daubigny (1789–1843), also a landscape painter, and later of Paul Delaroche.
After a period of hack work, painting box tops and clock faces and producing commercial illustrations, he turned to landscape etching and then to painting in the spirit of the Barbizon painters, though he added to their study of nature the practice of executing complete pictures of considerable size in the open air.
