A formal agreement makling the entire Apo Island coral reef a marine reserve with a smaller fish sanctuary was accepted by the island barangay and the Dauin Municipal Council in 1985.
The island is now protected under the municipal law and managed by the Marine Management Committee of the Apo Island community with support from Dauin Municipal Government, Protected Area Management Board-Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Philippine National Police and technical assistance from Silliman University.
The entire marine habitat around Apo Island, from the high tide mark to a distance of 500 m off shore is protected from all fishing methods or other uses destructive to the coral reef habitat.

His dive buddy, Michael Sarrosa, said to be a nephew of Negros Occidental Governor Joseph Marañon, was rushed to Cebu City for treatment of decompression sickness.
Decompression sickness, also called the bends, is caused by nitrogen bubbles forming in the bloodstream and tissues of the body.

DUMAGUETE CITY -- A Norwegian national on a scuba diving trip was found dead Friday about a kilometer from the shore of Barangay Masaplod Norte, Dauin town, Negros Oriental province, about 16 km south of here.
The body of Hanssen Olab, 56, was found by members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary Water Operations Unit, a civilian rescue group, headed by Jonathan Alerre around noon Friday.
Dauin is known internationally as a dive destination primarily because of Apo Island, considered as the Philippines' first successful example of community-based coastal resources management.

Michael Butler, spokesperson of the San Juan Beach Corp., which operates the resort, said the whirlwind struck amid strong rains at 1 a.m.
