 Description of the Geology of Dauphin County Pennsylvania
The two prongs of the fish-tail at the western end of the southern Anthracite coal field penetrate the northern part of the county; that of the Wiconisco coal basin for 5 miles; that of the Dauphin County coal basin for 10 miles; and along its southern edge runs the northern line of Lebanon County.
The southern half of Dauphin County is (1) a belt of valley slate (III) six miles wide; (2) a belt of limestone (II) three miles wide; (3) a belt of Mesozoic red shale and sandstone and trap, seven miles wide, to the Lancaster County line.

This register is the result of Pennsylvania's Gradual Emancipation Act of 1780, passed on March 1st, which sought to end slavery in a non-disruptive way.
It guaranteed property rights by allowing all slaveholders to keep their current slaves for life and provided a clear distinction between a slave and a free Black person by borrowing a feature of colonial property law which was used in settling property disputes: all property had to be registered.

The date and place of birth of Michael is not known, however, analysis of the Federal Census records indicates the date to be between 1755 and 1765 and the ages of his children indicates the date to be about 1755.
The first record of Michael in Dauphin County is found in the Federal Census of 1790 where he is listed 1-5-3 as being the head of a household consisting of vie sons under the age of sixteen years, his wife and two daughters.
On May 25, 1791 Michael Bower, yeoman, of Upper Paxton Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, purchased from Michael Harman and Ludwich Shellman a plantation in Upper Paxton Township consisting of 146-1/2 acres of land on the Susquehanna River by the lands of Joseph Brubaker, Reuben Heans and John Meetch (Deed Book G-1-250).
