The Daurian Hedgehog Mesechinus dauuricus is a solitary small hedgehog.
Currently, the Daurian hedgehog seems to have recovered and tends to move northwards and closer to cities due to more abundant food, less danger from agricultural activities and newfound human tolerance for their presence.
Some scientists put the Daurian hedgehog into the Erinaceus family as a subspecies of the Western European hedgehog.

The Daurian Redstart is a species of the Far East and South Siberia, the range of which is rather poorly known.

E.A. Krutovskaya described a hybridizing pair consisting of a male Daurian Redstart and a female Redstart that was feeding nestlings in a nest box near a building of the meteorological station in the Stolby Reserve (Krutovskaya 1958).

The Daurian steppe ecoregion is made of these terrestrial ecoregions: Daurian forest steppe; Mongolian-Manchurian grassland.
It is a sea of grass that forms the best and most intact example of an undisturbed steppe ecosystem and is also one of the last areas in the Palearctic that still supports stable herds of larger vertebrates.
A portion of the fauna comprises of the Pallas' cat (Felis manul), Daurian hedgehog (Hemiechinus dauricus), and Mongolian marmot (Marmot sibirica).

In 1993, together with Russian colleagues, ICF co-hosted an historic meeting of Russian, Chinese and Mongolian specialists to develop an international agreement for the conservation of the wetland and grassland regions shared by the three nations on what are known as the Daurian Steppes (another vernacular name of the White-naped Crane is the Daurian crane).
East of the Daurian Steppes, the lowlands of the Amur River also provide excellent nesting habitat for these cranes in both Russia and China.
In 1994, through the work of Dr. Sergei Smirenski with assistance from ICF and colleagues in Japan, Muraviovka Park was created on the Amur lowlands to include 12,000 acres of prime nesting habitat for 10-12 White-naped Crane pairs.

This was a travel day -- our lunch stop produced Forest Wagtail and Daurian Redstart; when we arrived at Lake Khanka about 6:30 p.m.
Every day we woke to the sound of both Common and Oriental Cuckoos calling; one morning our Russian leader, Yuri Gluschenko found a male Asian Paradise Flycatcher in the woods directly behind the cook tent.
During a long up-hill hike, we saw Chestnut-flanked White-eye, Blue-and-White Flycatcher, Daurian Redstart, Gray and White Wagtails, Dollarbird and White-throated Rock Thrush.

Two hours of birdwatching after we closed the stations put the smiles back on our faces.
We were also very pleased to see Turnstone (1), Jack Snipe (1), Citrine Wagtail (1) and a Curlew Sandpiper.

A female alone, unfortunately--the males are much more colorful, with a full red breast, fl back and face and a white cap.
What marks this bird as a Daurian is the white patch on the wing.
This bird is related to one of my first finds a bit more than a year ago, the Red-flanked Bluetail.
