Allen had his first television appearance as the host of the BBC talent show New Faces in 1959.
Allen returned to Britain in 1964 and made a variety of appearances on ITV, including The Blackpool Show, Val Parnell's Sunday Night at the London Palladium and The Val Doonican Show.
Towards the end of his life, Allen was forced to give up both his cigarettes and excess alcohol, both of which he enjoyed on his television appearances in the 1970s.

David Tynan O'Mahoney (July 6, 1936 – March 10, 2005), better known as Dave Allen, was an Irish comedian, popular in Britain in the 1970s.
This was followed by Dave Allen at Large (1971-1981), which introduced his trademark solo joke-telling-while-sitting-on-a-stool-drinking routine, and Dave Allen (1981-1990).
In 1993 he moved back to ITV where he starred in their own version of Dave Allen, which was to be his final regular television series.

Allen's choice of a career as a stop-motion animator was the result seeing the films of Willis O'Brien and Ray Harryhausen in the 1950s and early 1960s.
Allen's first work in a theatrical feature can be seen in EQUINOX (1967 but not released until 1971), in which he animated a nightmarish octopus-like creature, a giant tusked simian character called Taurus and other creatures.
It was one of the rare occasions when Allen stepped in front of the camera and as such is now a treasured reminder of the Puppet Master who put so many monstrous creatures and fantastic dreams up on the cinema screen.

Dave was a pretty good story and joke teller, but I think a pre-requisite for doing so is that the jokes actually be funny, which they weren't.
Dave would go on and on and on for at least 2-4 minutes setting up a story, but the punchline almost always was a let down.

My parents used to watch his show, which was on TV quite late - far too late for a kid my age but since I was a night owl already at a tiny age, they usually let me sit with them and watch TV is I couldn't sleep and had nothing to read.
I really liked Dave Allen and his whiskey glass :) At that time, nobody believed kids would turn into alcoholics because they watched somebody on TV drink alcohol.
