You'll hear Peggy Lee backed by the Frank DeVol orchestra on some tunes, but accompanied on most by an intimate quartet led by her husband, guitarist Dave Barbour (they met working for Goodman).
Influenced by both Billie Holiday and Ethel Waters, Peggy made sure you always knew who was singing, with her careful respect for the lyrics and her very distinctive, bluesy, liquid approach to pitch.
The Peggy Lee small group back-up with her husband Dave Barbour is especially good.

Left Goodman, married guitarist Dave Barbour (1943, divorced 1952; he was an alcoholic and they remained close until he died).
She retired but could not stay away: Inveigled by Capitol’s Dave Dexter to sing two sides in a album of jazz 78s (unusual then) it was clear that she was a great interpreter; she played a character as she sang and made you believe it.
She and Barbour wrote "It’s A Good Day" (number 16, 1947) and "Mañana" (number 1, 1948), others; he led the orchestra on the latter and many others.

Review: Continuing its For Lovers series, no doubt as a means for expanding the audience for its artists and for repackaging some of the material from its massive catalog, Verve Records has released tracks from some of Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong’s albums from the 1950’s—specifically Ella And Louis and Ella And Louis Again.
While Norman Granz was tending to Fitzgerald’s career with the recording of some of her most highly praised Songbook albums, he was determined as well to pair her and Armstrong during a recording session.

But even in the middle '40s, one hears his enormous feel for the lyrics and the truly unique way he had in delivering a song and, of course, his perfect pitch.
Around this time, guitarist Barbour had been spending considerable time backing his wife, Peggy Lee, so there were no barriers limiting his ability to provide Tormé with superb support.

It was also nice to hear the sorely overlooked Peggy Lee/Dave Barbour tune 'It's a Good Day.' DeLeo has the Peggy Lee phrasing down pat, and she has mastered her understated swinging style.
