The career of Dave Bing began in 1959 where he played at the Spingarn, Washington D.C. high school, where he was a three-year letter winner, he was an all-Inter High, an All-Metro, an All-East member and in 1962 was in Parade magazine and was a member of the All-American Team.
Dave Bing was also a member of the Sigma Alpha Mu Fraternity at Syracuse.
In 1966 Bing joined the NBA as a first round pick of the Detroit Pistons, where in his rookie year he scored 1,601 points (20.0 points per game) and was named the NBA Rookie Of The Year.

Bing was a prolific scorer with a sweet shooting touch, but also a fantastic passer (if assists were official statistics throughout his career he would have racked up quite a few), and a phenomenal rebounder.
As a senior Bing was named All-American, was 5th in the nation in scoring with 28.4 ppg, an SU record.
Bing would play 12 seasons in the NBA primarily with the Detroit Pistons, but also with the Washington Bullets and Boston Celtics.

Bing also confessed that he chose Syracuse partly because he doubted his own skills and thought his chances of standing out in college would be better in a lower profile basketball program.
Bing was the first guard to set the scoring pace in 20 years (since Max Zaslofsky of the 1947-48 Chicago Stags of the Basketball Association of America).
Bing, who had married his college sweetheart at Syracuse and was the father of two young daughters by the time he entered the NBA, had signed as a rookie for $15,000 per year.
