FFWD Weekly - October 14, 2004   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
In Bronconnier’s first term in office he has developed a reputation as an aggressive, take-charge kind of mayor who gets things done regardless of whether that leads to tension and division among council members.
Bronconnier’s tougher approach could be seen when he led the charge to terminate the contract of city CEO Dale Stanway in October 2003.
Bronconnier blamed the debacle on senior administration, saying there was an "accountability gap" between administration and city council.

Bronconnier is urging the city's new council - to be elected tomorrow - to make a 311 phone line a top priority.
A live person would answer, said Bronconnier, adding 311 is currently in use in such major centres as Baltimore, LosAngeles, Chicago, and New York.
Since it would be tied into the city's website, it would also give people the option of making online inquiries, and even allow checking the status of a service call in much the same way courier firms let customers track deliveries.

Calgary Board of Education - Trustees
CBE Trustees have sent a letter to Mayor Dave Bronconnier indicating they cannot support his proposed transfer of the education portion of property taxes from the Province to the City.
The reason Trustees cannot currently support Mayor Bronconnier’s plan – even though they agree with his push for better infrastructure funding – is that it calls for the transfer, from the Province to the City, of a stable source of operational funding.
If, as Mayor Bronconnier proposes, this tax money were collected by the City, then used to fund infrastructure (schools included), it would mean the Province – and school boards across Alberta -- would lose a pool of tax dollars ear-marked for education, a percentage of which currently funds operations.

Gauntlet Municipal Election Supplement 2004 - Democratic Deficit
In a move that would equate political suicide in any other arena, Bronconnier was quoted in the Calgary Herald describing the resulting debate as a "gong show", and made the decision not to attend any subsequent debates because he believed the other candidates were not serious.
It is impossible not to view Bronconnier's decision to remove himself from further debates, and thus effectively eliminate any criticisms or opposing view points, as at least slightly undemocratic and vaguely reminiscent of the accused totalitarian regime.
This certainty is unfortunate, as it means he can do just as he pleases during the campaign, including refuse to address key issues or hold debate with other candidates, and is still assured unchallenged reign of Calgary for the next three years.
