Cockrum was living in upstate New York but preparing to move to South Carolina in late 2003, when he was struck down by an illness that became pneumonia and then double pneumonia.

Talent Pool 04 - Dave Cockrum (Feb 1999)
Dave Cockrum enjoyed the height of comics celebrity in the early and middle 1970s, appearing unexpectedly in 1973 to renew Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes.
Cockrum, admitted as the last member of Marvel's "bullpen," enjoyed considerable celebrity in those days; his resume between 1973 and 1975 suggested a future eminence for the man that never came to pass.
Cockrum's excellent use of darks in his work had gone; Cockrum's earlier cleanness of line had gone by 1974; Cockrum's attention to detail had, somehow, also gone (perhaps the casualty of an indifferent inker); the eye-pleasing proportions had gone; and his occasional failings in handling body language that appeared as aberrations in his early work.

 Past Masters: Dave Cockrum
First, let’s begin by agreeing that Cockrum was one of the most innovative character designers of the 1970s.
He was stationed in Guam at the time, serving his country as a sailor in the U.S. Navy, and unable to gauge fan reaction to his debut, but some of the editors at DC stood up and took note.
Nevertheless, he walked Cockrum around the offices and introduced him to the guy who was, at that moment, the single biggest star in the industry: Neal Adams.
