Impossible Odds - Dave Duncan   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Duncan writes terrifically readable adventure fantasy, the short of thing that at first glance seems unchallenging, the sort of book which teenage boys devour greedily but the rest of us are supposed to skip over while we look for more serious books.
I'm not saying he's a particularly impressive prose stylist, though I admit writing transparent story-telling prose is a skill many novelists can't master, and he's not writing complex sermons on the meaning of life, but then again, neither was Dumas or Sabatini.
Duncan has more fun with the plot than usual, laying on the deceptions, double crosses and hidden motivations in a manner more common in contrived mysteries, and with his gift for spirited characterisation, the result is a hugely enjoyable, and intelligent read.

Crescent Blues Book Views | Dave Duncan: The Gilded Chain
A superb world builder, Dave Duncan creates flawless, intriguing environments and excels at characterization.
He tells the tale of Durendal, who becomes one of the "King's Blades," men sworn to serve their king (or the person he designates) with a sword thrust through the heart.
Duncan's prose in The Gilded Chain is economical, as sharp as one of his own "Blades." [Duncan's] keen eye for character, his subtle dealing with certain moral quandaries of being a Blade, and his picaresque snap-shots of foreign lands, court treachery, and action which leaves the reader breathless are enough to make me a fan.

Dave Duncan is fine author and I very much enjoyed his tetrology, "A Man of his Word." "The Gilded Chain" is part of the "King's Blades" series, but can be read as a stand-alone fantasy.
The typical follow up to that line is, of course, and one for all, and, while still true if one is a Blade, Dave Duncan's version of the Musketeers, the all for one portion of the phrase is probably where a Blade would stop when quoting the famous Musketeer catch phrase.

Review of Sky of Swords by Dave Duncan
Scorned by her powerful father, married for politics, unable to save her sick brother, plunged into a world of civil war that she would do anything to avoid, Malinda continuously tries to find a way out--only to plunge into greater disaster.
Author Dave Duncan's (see more BooksForABuck.com reviews of novels by Duncan) creation of the King's Blades--a group of men sworn and spelled to protect their wards, raises SKY OF SWORDS above the average fantasy.
When Malinda is unable to prevent a royal murder, the entire force of King's Blades plunges into an insanity that results in mass destruction and in the weakening of the trust between the Blades and the people.
