Dave Edmunds: From Small Things: The Best of Dave Edmunds - PopMatters Music Review
Edmunds was among the first of the rockabilly/roots rockers to bust through, electrifying me with songs like "Crawling from the Wreckage" and "Girls Talk", from the sparkling Repeat When Necessary.
Edmunds can sound a little too polished and a little too careful in his recreation of the late '50s/early '60s rock sound, whereas The Blasters fully inhabited their music, creating something dangerous and new.
But Edmunds was -- for me and many of my friends -- a touchstone, lending me entry into a musical world where groups such as The Blasters and X and The Clash held sway.

[The New] Rolling Stone Album Guide: Dave Edmunds
Dave Edmunds was one of the first people to look for the future of rock and roll in its past.
Edmunds' only claim to fame back then was that he had taken a couple of pieces of classical music, Khatchaturian's "Sabre Dance" and Bizet's "Farandole," and turned them into high-speed guitar romps.
The second was that he matured as a studio wiz, emerging as the producer of choice for English pub rock bands Brinsley Schwarz and Ducks Deluxe -- bands which played his kind of new-fangled old-time rock and roll, and gave him the collaborator he needed to re-launch his solo career.

Rockpile was recorded because Edmunds needed to make an LP to capitalize on his worldwide smash single, a one-man remake of "I Hear You Knockin'," the classic Dave Bartholomew number from the mid-'50s.
Dave still laid down a lot of the tracks unaided, but also utilized the services of members of the Rumour and the now-defunct Brinsleys, forming a significant partnership with the latter's Nick Lowe.

Dave Edmunds : Rockpile - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Dave Edmunds' debut album Rockpile established his sound -- not only his revivalist tendencies, but also his method of meticulously recreating the sound and style of classic early rock & roll, R&B, and country records.
Edmunds plays nearly every instrument on the album, with bassist John Williams being the only full-time collaborator.
As a result, the record doesn't sound "live," it has a pinched, precise quality that may contradict the spontaneity that was at the core of the original singles, but it does offer an otherworldly quality that makes the record distinctive.
