Ferriss was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in 1942 after spending 3 years on the pitching staff at Mississippi State University (earning All-SEC honors).
Perhaps a foreshadowing of things to come, Asthma slowed Ferriss in the latter half of the 1945 season, and he finished with a 21-10 record for the 7th place Red Sox--earning Rookie-of-the-Year and All-Star honors.
Coach Ferriss continues to contribute to the Delta State athletic program and can be found in the stands on gameday.

Ferriss joined the Red Sox in 1945 as a 23-year-old rookie after his discharge from the army air corps due to an asthma condition.
In 1946 the Red Sox won their first pennant in 28 years, and Ferriss was spectacular with a 25-6 record, a 3.20 ERA, 26 complete games and three saves in five relief appearances.
Dave began 1946 with 10 straight wins and later in the season won 12 straight to join Walter Johnson (Washington, 1913) and Preacher Roe (Brooklyn, 1951) as the only pitchers in M.L. history to have two streaks of 10 or more wins in one season.
