Topic: Dave Fleischer

Fleischer Studios - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Max Fleischer went on to become an employee of the Jam Handy studio, and Isadore Sparber, Dan Gordon, and Max Fleischer's son-in-law Seymour Kneitel became the new heads of the studio, which was moved from Miami back to New York by 1943.
The Fleischers were never a major force in the industry again, but their films and characters have remained popular, and by the 1980s, the Fleischers were recognized as the animation pioneers that they were.
The copyright for the Fleischers' cartoons was not renewed by Famous or Paramount, and as a result the majority of the Fleischers' cartoons entered the public domain.

 Dave Fleischer
The Fleischer brothers were sons of an Austrian tailor who took his family to America in 1887, and they completed their first cartoon film in 1915.
The cinematic world of the mid-1930s Fleischer cartoons was urban, gritty, dark, and obsessed with sex and death; it was the opposite of Disney's rural, bright, and colourful image of the world.
Early Popeye cartoons were characterized by typical Fleischer idiosyncrasies: as the studio's characters were not "set" by model sheets until the mid-1930s, their physical characteristics changed from film to film depending on which team of animators drew them.

Dave Fleischer - Biography - Moviefone
A cutter at Pathé Films in the early teens, Dave Fleischer and his brother Max made the first of their imaginative "Out of the Inkwell" cartoons starring Koko the Clown for Paramount in 1916.
In the '30s, the Fleischers had even greater success with their beloved characters Betty Boop (Boop-Ooop-A-Doop, Is My Palm Red?) and Popeye the Sailor (Beware of Barnacle Bill, Popeye the Sailor Meets Sinbad the Sailor).
After leaving Paramount, Dave Fleischer became head of animation at Columbia until 1944; afterwards, he served as a gag writer for live-action comedies at Universal into the late 1950s.

Don Markstein's Toonopedia: Max Fleischer Studio
Fleischer's "Out of the Inkwell" series (relatively little of which actually wound up being rotoscoped) quickly rose to prominence among the Bray offerings.
When, in 1921, Max and Dave Fleischer formed a partnership to produce animated films on their own (with Max as producer and Dave as director), the Bray studio lost its brightest light.
Another Fleischer invention, the Three-Dimensional Setback (a tiny stage with animation cels hung in front, creating a startlingly three-dimensional effect) was every bit as effective as Disney's multi-plane camera.

ASIFA-Hollywood Animation Archive Biopedia: FLEISCHER, Dave
Dave Tendlar, an animator for the Fleischer’s, said that “Dave Fleischer’s theory was that every scene should have a gag; nobody should animate a scene without a gag.” Sight gags were important to Dave.
Dave went on to California to be the head of Screen Gems as an executive producer.
Dave was one of five brothers and one sister.

He did give Dave credit for coming in to him with a piece of sheet music with Helen Kane on the cover and asking him to develop a character based on Kane.
Dave, of course, maintained that he was by far the person most responsible for the output of the studio, but Dave himself was an unreliable source.

Brothers Max and Dave Fleischer, the sons of European immigrants, arrived in New York City in 1887.
As the studio grew, the Fleischers expanded their line to include Popeye and an animated adaptation of the classic “Gulliver’s Travels.” On the tail of these '30s successes, they were contracted in 1941 to animate a new comic book character created by Joe Shuster and Jerry Seigel.
While the Fleischers’ animated body of work is quite remarkable, their legacy has been their influence on future animators.

He didn't have the facilities: The move to Miami may have solved his labor difficulties (one of the primary reasons for relocation), but it was far from the filmmaking centers of Hollywood and New York, and lacked the kind of facilities easily found in those capitals.
Fleischer, ironically, had been the one to validate the "Disney's Folly" wags' concerns.
Max and Dave Fleischer, meanwhile, would make one more attempt to challenge Disney's primacy in feature films, but it was increasingly obvious that they had neither the talent, the resources, nor the understanding of successful feature technique to bring it off.

The Fleischers obviously noted his superior ability at handling menace (and trying to scare the kids in the audience, as with the ending of "Popular Melodies") made him the one to handle the Popeye two-reelers, where a stronger story line was needed than the straight gag cartoons that Kneitel specialized in.
As far as Crandall leaving Fleischer is concerned, it would seem largely due to the emotional issues connected to the deteriorating relationship between the brothers.
This made Max and Dave employees of Paramount, and continued until May 1942, when their stock and control of the studio was supposed to have been returned.

Lois Lane shows plenty of spunk long before anyone ever heard the phrase "women's liberation." She bluntly calls Clark Kent a fool, packs her portable typewriter (a 1940s laptop) almost anywhere, wields a machine gun to foil train robbers, and flies off solo, Amelia Earhart-style, to interview a mad scientist.
Overall, however, the series maintains a fairly high standard throughout, probably because associates of the Fleischers also worked on the later entries in the series.
