David Gahan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
David "Dave" Gahan (born May 9, 1962 in Epping, Essex, England) is the baritone lead-singer for English synth pop stalwarts, Depeche Mode.
Gahan compensated for the loss of his father by becoming something of a "real wide boy with a chip on my shoulder, a real yob".
Gahan agreed, and shortly thereafter the band was renamed to Depeche Mode (a name suggested by Gahan after he had come across a fashion magazine by the name of Dépêche-mode) which has been translated to "Fast Fashion" many times.

Dave Gahan - Music Downloads - Online
When Gahan joined Depeche Mode in 1980, he was the group's missing puzzle piece, a charismatic, stylish singer.
However, as keyboardist Martin L. Gore's songs darkened with the 1986 LP Black Celebration, Gahan matched the bleakness in Gore's lyrics by singing in a grimmer tone; it turned Gahan into a major influence on future industrial, gothic rock, and synth pop acts.
By 1993's Songs of Faith and Devotion, Gahan was living in Los Angeles and, inspired by the look and sound of grunge bands, grew his hair long and started sporting a beard.

Dave Gahan - Paper Monsters - Reprise Records - CD
All that remained for Dave Gahan to do was sing the songs; so, in essence, he was and still is, “The voice of Depeche Mode”.
While there are indubitable traces of DM throughout the album, there is a confidence in Gahan’s vocals that is no longer based on rock n roll bravura but the confidence that comes with having lived through hard times and emerging stronger than before.
His battle with drugs and personal demons are laid bare in most of the songs and yet, the album is not all gloom and doom, as he talks of his redemption and being able to feel love once again.

In 1991, Dave separated from Joanne, his first wife and long-time love, Joanne, leaving their only son Jack to live with his mother.

Dave Gahan - PopMatters Concert Review
Dave Gahan, known the world 'round as the lead singer of seminal synth-pop band Depeche Mode, is one over-the-top performer.
Gahan paced the show with a steady, growing transcendence, starting with most of the high-energy solo material, easing into mellower songs like "A Little Piece" and "Bitter Again", while sprinkling the main set at the right times with DM classics like "A Question of Time" and "Walking in My Shoes".
Gahan played for over 90 minutes sans his longtime band, and his faithful and devoted wanted more.

Lyrically autobiographical, songs deal with Gahan's trouble with relationships and intoxicants and, though they lack Gore's sense of drama and perversity, they do have a maudlin charm.

After the disappointing dirge of Martin L Gore's "Counterfeit II" all eyes are focusing on Dave Gahan to deliver that great solo record with "Paper Monsters".
When Gahan was on suicidal drug binges it was always Gore who was there trying to make a positive out of the negative and turn the experience into heartfelt lyrics which Gahan could sing with a degree of honesty.
It's hard for us to say as in terms of songwriting there's no precedent of Gahan's to compare it to, but it seems as if Chandler is living in the shadows afraid of trying something new and in the process attempting rehashes of his friends better works.

Sultry photographs of Gahan on the cover could be of a latino matinee idol - slicked back fl hair, sharp suit and ironic expression - and, it has to be said, this is a very seductive album.

Dave Gahan: Paper Monsters - review of Dave Gahan's new album featuring Dirty Sticky Floors
Dave Gahan's first solo effort wasn't awaited with much anticipation, as Martin Gore the maestro and one-man band of Depeche Mode, has never succeeded in getting over the hurdle with his Counterfeits, except for the single "In a Manner of Speaking".
Combined with Thomas's atmospheric, bewitching textures, Gahan's voice manages to transport, when abandoning the sometimes showy side of rock for fragility, all with restraint.
Bypassing the silliness of certain lyrics "Maybe one day we'll all be free", what's especially memorable is the sincerity of this record, a sort of private diary of a wounded man, spelled on the mode of confidence.
