Early a decade ago, Dave Graney was a household name who terrified young girls when he accepted his "King of Pop" award for ARIA's best male artist with a pepperoni stuffed down his pink velour jumpsuit.
On Hashish, Graney is suave and sinister with tongue firmly in cheek as he harks back to the days when noir was hip and people called you "squire".
Moore's album Liquor - her second solo CD effort - is peppered with vibes, melodica and horns and harks back to her youth in Adelaide, as she sings about trains, evil nuns, family holidays and inspiring women with "a taste for the abyss", such as the local burlesque outfit the Town Bikes.

Posted by: Chris at November 18, 2005 12:58 PM I've enjoyed all of Dave Graney's work, and it's not unusual for an artist to write and record songs in the same style over and over again, but his problem is that he never changes and never steps it up a gear.

I was standing next to Dave just inside the entrance when a staffer approached him - "Dave, could you do us a favour and sing a few songs?" Dave - "I don't do that sort of thing".
Then came persuader number two - a spunky journalist I recognised from the news - "Are you Dave Graney?" "Yes." "Then prove it - sing." Dave (with lots of people waiting for the reply) - "You've had your little joke, now move along." She blushed off into the void.

HASHISH and LIQUOR – Dave Graney and Clare Moore (Cockaigne/Reverberation)
Hopefully it’s not too much of an over-simplification to paint Dave Graney as the “wordman” of his partnership with drummer/wife/muse Clare Moore, but it’s the lyrical musings on “Hashish” - about the nature of stardom, being stoned (in the many senses of the term) and all parts in-between - that get me every time.
