  Portrait of David Langford
Dave Langford is a Welsh-born fiction writer, critic, humorist and essayist.
Dave's fireworks were the size of footballs, they were wrapped in stiff brown paper, had wire fuses and anti-tamper devices and you half-expected to find instructions about telephoning newspapers with a password.
Dave is a rather amiable and harmless-looking man. At any fan gathering he will spend the evening cupping his ear hopefully in all the wrong directions, but then later will be found to have overheard only those things that were not meant to be overheard.

David Langford - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
David Langford (born April 10, 1953, in Newport, Monmouthshire) is a British science fiction author and critic.
His novelette An Account Of A Meeting With Denizens Of Another World 1871, is an entertaining account of a UFO encounter, as experienced by a Victorian, but is notable chiefly for the framing story, in which Langford claimed to have found the manuscript in an old desk.
Langford has won numerous other Hugo Awards, mostly for his fan journalism: 19 for Best Fan Writer, 5 for Ansible as Best Fanzine, and another for Ansible as Best Semiprozine.

In many ways my relationship with Dave Bridges was an exception to the rule because the David I knew through fanzines, and then through letters is almost identical to the David who met me at Gatwick Airport, who is the David I'm married to now.

Of all the science fiction writers living within a stone's throw of the cemetery on the east side of Reading, Dave Langford is undoubtedly the deafest — and, it pains me to admit, the funniest.
It is a tragedy to readers of serious fiction that David Langford has recklessly chosen to squander so many of his splendid talents on demagoguery aimed at science fiction fandom, the street people of the literary world.

Langford wonders whether 'the better critics' amongst the contributors to such volumes "tend to be more sparing with their praise, more reluctant to dish out five star ratings… little knowing that behind their backs the not-so-good critics are showering top marks on pet authors."
One reason why Langford is such a good critic is that he is such a good writer, particularly of comic prose.
And if we look for Langford’s peers in the world of criticism today then we’re most likely to find them in the world of reviewers rather than academic critics: John Clute, Nick Gevers, Paul di Fillipo, all excellent, but none of them even one third so witty or funny as Langford himself.
