Liebman pursued his jazz interest by studying with Lennie Tristano and Charles Lloyd.

Dave Liebman was among them, but fortunately, over the years, he’s managed to shirk most of the semblances in his sound and strike out on his own personal path.
The Liebman of today seems a musician secure with his past and his present; a veteran who has weathered the tests time threw at him and still sees improvised music as his guiding pursuit and primary source of creative sustenance.
Liebman’s dry fluttering soprano phrases ripple in soothing confluence with Copland’s bright right hand patterns on the title pieces, but somber hues are the object of study on the saxophonist’s “The Searcher.” Copland’s luminous single note filaments plumb a rich melancholy mood, one that prefaces Liebman’s own ruminations on world-weary tenor.

I of course contacted Dave Liebman and received an original letter from him stating that this letter did not originate from Dave Liebman and was a forgery "and that the contents contained within these documents are categorically untrue".
Liebman was scheduled to perform a concert in the Greenwich House in New York for the National Endowment of the Arts.
Liebman and I were willing to let go of the past, but in light of the use of newsgroups to perpetrate new rumors about us, it is necessary to have this document posted once and for all.

In 1977, Liebman did a world tour with Chick Corea and by 1978 formed the David Liebman Quintet with John Scofield, Kenny Kirkland and Terumasa Hino as featured sidemen.
In the 1990s, the Dave Liebman Group, with Phil Markowitz on keyboards, Vic Juris on guitar, Jamey Haddad on drums and Tony Marino on bass recorded several CDs, toured Europe, Japan and Israel and pursued a very eclectic, contemporary style.

Dave Liebman, who played with Miles Davis' group during 1974-1975, pays tribute to the innovative trumpeter throughout this excellent Owl CD.
To Liebman's credit, he does not ignore Davis' fusion period; in fact, he starts out with the most recent composition (Robert Irving's "Code M.D." from 1984) and works his way backwards chronologically.
Liebman's highly expressive soprano, Juris' echoey guitar, and pianist Phil Markowitz are the main soloists, but everyone plays quite well; the inclusion of Caris Visentin's English horn on "Pan Piper" (from Sketches of Spain) is a nice touch.

Saxophonist David Liebman and pianist Richie Beirach were among the brightest musicians to emerge in the ‘70s.
Frankly, I've never loved Liebman's playing; it strikes me as a bit hollow and histrionic, though it's certainly energetic; but he and Beirach -- in many duo recordings, in a group called Lookout Farm, and in their more recent quartet, Quest -- have a deep thing together.
Tunes like "The Iguana's Ritual" (first featured on another ECM collector's-item disc, Liebman's "Drum Ode") could have been recorded by one of the early groups that spun off of "Bitches Brew"; Liebman and Beirach are definitely under the spell of Miles on the first disc here, and it kicks major ass.
