Dave Luckett was already seated up one end of the table, all poised and ready to read.
Dave began to read from his novel The Truth About Magic, and I relaxed a bit because Dave is one of those rare beasts: an author who can read his own work out loud in an audible and engaging manner.
Dave finished reading and a trolley load of Mitchs and Daikaijus were wheeled in.

 eidolon.net: Review
Dave Luckett's first novel set in Tenebra, the Aurealis Award-winning A Dark Winter, was a dryly humorous, nuts-and-bolts fantasy about a young city guardsman swept up in a battle against an evil magician manipulating the forces of nature to his own ends.
It is something that extends to his relationship with Arienne, arguably the centre of the book, and to his inability to not notice how he mishandles it and her.
It is to Luckett's credit that he manages to avoid many of the traps common to second novels and to middle books of series.

The 1981 season was a bad one even for Arrows: chief mechanic Dave Luckett was fortunate not to be killed on the starting grid at Zolder when the other Arrows driver, Sigfried Stohr, rammed into Patrese and trapping the unfortunate Luckett between them.
Luckett was fortunate to escape with only a broken leg and finger plus some severe lacerations.
It produced a the new Dave Wass A4 for the season and also the A5, a straight copy of the Williams FW08 later on.

By the time the grid had formed up after a second parade lap, the field had become strung out and Patrese stalled his Arrows.
One of his mechanics Dave Luckett jumped over the pitwall and tried to restart the car but at the same moment the race was started.
Most of the cars avoided the Arrows but Patrese's team mate Siegfried Stohr was unsighted and swerved across the track, thinking he had seen a gap in the traffic and he ran into the back of Patrese.

In her research, Luckett reveals more about the alien than the space vessel, which is undoubtedly his intent.
While beginning with an admirably alien mindset, it quickly becomes obvious that Luckett's alien is based upon an arachnid template.
The inevitable switch to a human vantage comes several paragraphs too late to surprise with the revelation of "spider," but the story doesn't suffer for the overzealous foreshadowing.

The accident between Stohr, Patrese and Luckett was cause for an immediate rule change - the very same that David Coulthard fell victim of in the 2000 Canadian GP.
In Monaco, his 14th place on the grid looked like he was unaffected by the accident to Luckett, but in fact the gap with Riccardo was again up with over a half second.
His mechanic, Dave Luckett rushed to the back of his Arrows, trying to bring it into life.

Dave Luckett's A Dark Winter (Omnibus) offers a solidly observant hero, in love with arms and armour, travelling through hard company and alien magic to a devastating version of victory.
With A Dark Winter, Dave Luckett gives new life to the stalest of current genres: the high fantasy quest novel.
His characters are realistic and often amusing, the details of the quest de-romanticise the process of trekking across eternal wastelands, and the set-piece battles and magical encounters of the last fifty pages are original and splendid.
