This was a confusing state of affairs seeing as Dave was a baseball player and in absolutely no way a geek of any kind, but Dave is a confusing kind of guy.
Since he was attending the same university as Jim and Jammer, Dave naturally heard of their desperate need for players.
Since deep down (and, really, quite near the surface and all areas in-between as well) Dave is about the most giving and helping friend a person could ever have, he decided to unselfishly give over a fair amount of his time to learning how to game and filling a seat for the newly-forming group.

Dave Marsh is probably best known to readers of THE ROC as the author of 50 Ways To Fight Censorship and as the editor of the anti-censorship newsletter Rock & Rap Confidential.
Marsh has never been a typical rock critic, he cares too much about reaching everyday rock fans to be that.
Marsh recounts all of this like the skilled storyteller that he is, but readers of THE ROC will be interested in the book because of the anti-rock forces are such a large part of the story.

Marsh's studied, intimate portrait of a rock star as an American hero (while decried by some as slanted and subjective), was unprecedented in the still young field, and it helped put both its author and its subject on the map.
Dave Marsh's next biography after his celebrated Bruce Springsteen tome was this tribute to Elvis Presley - a logical step for any true believer in the power of rock 'n' roll.
One hopes, then, that Dave Marsh got a hell of a paycheck for this, the self-proclaimed "world's lengthiest act of rock criticism." Though that boast was undoubtedly made tongue-in-cheek, Marsh tackles his subject with utter seriousness.

Marsh truly cheats the reader by ignoring or glossing over such subjects as 1)the breakup of Bruce's first marriage, even though it basically is the subject of 'Tunnel of Love'.
Marsh has fused the two into a very satisfying history of what may very well be the only rock artist to age with grace and relevance in the public eye, yet maintain his unbreakable bond with his fans.

Marsh's passionate, often caustic newsletter Rock and Rap Confidential -- self-published since 1983 -- has provided a much-needed alternative to the ass-kissing pap and smarmy prose that today passes for music journalism in the pages of Spin, Details, Rolling Stone, and the Village Voice.
Marsh is also among a mere handful of critics who never subscribed to the dunderheaded myth that rock-and-roll all but died in the late Fifties, only to be revived by the Beatles and the ensuing British Invasion.
Whether or not you agree with his selections, the book is a near-perfect distillation of the impact great rock-and-roll can and should have on people, both music critics and the rest of the population who were smart enough to go into other lines of work.
