And Pirner, ever the craftsman, both delivers and moves beyond the expectations, proving himself to be a surprisingly mature and exploring artist within such a fundamentally informal setting.
And if the album seems to move in every direction, it is a testament to Pirner's talents that he manages to hold it all together, to bring a unique and personal touch to the album.
Pirner, quite simply, sounds as if he had great fun doing this, and the album's Americana/soul approach feels genuine and respectful, steering well clear off either pastiche or sheer, lazy trend-jumping.

Dave Pirner became the object of tabloid fascination when he was dating Winona Ryder.
Dave Pirner and Dan Murphy asked Mueller what he wanted to do, and even though he was ill and knew he’d be too sick to tour, he said he liked the new songs and wanted to make a record.
He sat down with Pirner and Murphy and told them he thought some of the songs needed to be re-recorded, a few new songs might be needed, and that he hated some of the mixes.

On his first solo album, Dave Pirner delves farther into the classic-rock cannon than he ever managed to as the frontman and main songwriter in the Minneapolis band Soul Asylum, and he brings to mind the white soul of Eric Clapton.
Pirner’s lyrics draw you into a stream-of-conscious-like realm filled with failed relationships, desperate love, and the fight for survival in everyday life.
The heavier, mid-tempo "364" is well served by Pirner’s raspy vocals; the lovely piano ballad "Start Treating People Right" ends the disc on a warmly tuneful note.

One thing Pirner knew he wanted to make part of his solo effort was an R&B feel that's never been part of Soul Asylum's makeup but is very much a part of his own musical grounding.
Of the latter, Pirner -- who's lyrics have been known to veer towards the confessional and cathartic -- notes that "It was a bit of a different direction for me, in a way.

Lead singer Dave Pirner now often dedicates "Without A Trace" to the memory of late bassist Karl Mueller.

Pirner insists, "What's going on in my life at the time has never really been the focus of what I write songs about," but it doesn't take a great deal of imagination to find autobiography in numerous Dim Light ditties.
As if to emphasize this point, Pirner reveals that Soul Asylum is set to record a song for a second Sweet Relief benefit project, this one dedicated to the work of Vic Chesnutt, an exceptional artist who was paralyzed in an automobile accident during the Eighties.

Pirner was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin on April 16, 1964.
By 1984, Pirner had moved from drums to rhythm guitar and lead vocals (Grant Young took over behind the traps), and the band had moved far enough away from the strict hardcore aesthetic to prompt a name change to Soul Asylum.
In 2002, Pirner's first solo album, a contemplative R&B influenced effort called Faces and Names, was released; that same year, Soul Asylum resumed touring, and the group blocked out plans for a new album in 2003.
