Dave's big break came when he was asked to replace Hugh Whitaker as the Housemartin's drummer in the mid 80s.
Upon the later formation of the Beautiful South, Dave fatefully became lead singer, though his self admitted lack of stage presence (he is after all primarily a drummer!) has led to him falling back behind Paul Heaton.
Dave's voice is both powerful and unique and is showcased in all its glory on his forthcoming solo album 'Hello Cruel World'.

The Bob Paterson Agency - Homespun
The Homespun project initially started as an outlet for Dave’s song writing whilst The Beautiful South were working on a ‘covers’ project, but as he wrote more, and more tracks it became obvious that the project would take on a more serious role and an album release was imminent.
Dave then enlisted the help of his musician friends, all boasting impressive credentials; Tony Robinson took on keyboards, he had previously worked with the Super Furry Animals, Gary Hammond then came onboard as the percussionist, he had previously worked with the Nina Simone band.
Dave made a conscious decision to step away from the familiar sound of The Beautiful South, by loosing the drums and electric guitars and aiming for a folk-based framework (heavily influenced by the Grateful Dead’s classic album ‘American Beauty’)

Songwriting partner and guitarist Dave Rotheray is at the mixing desk with their engineer, who is comfortably the best-dressed man in the room.
Rotheray and Heaton have been writing together for almost 10 years - the band's first single, Song for Whoever ("I love you from the bottom of my pencil case"), went to number two in the charts in June 1989.
The camaraderie between the two, and within the whole Beautiful South set-up, is palpable, and is as much a key to their longevity as their way with a tune.

Rotheray: At the time we were listening to Nanci Griffith and Randy Travis's third album a lot.
Rotheray: Yes, but in fairness, it's a plucky little single and it did, unfortunately, come out while A Little Time was still in the chart and selling quite well.
Rotheray: I've come round to Paul's way of thinking, though I think it's clear from the song that it's not the model but the industry that's being attacked, What changed my mind was blokes coming up to me and saying they thought it was funny and shouting the chorus.

Paul Heaton and Dave Rotheray - the songwriting partners who are responsible for The Beautiful South’s tunes - seem to have been rather smitten by the Mutant Ninja Turtle bug.
Paul and Dave Rotheray might be the group’s writers, but its actually Paul who is, on the quiet, the group’s unofficial leader, partly because of his track record with the once famous Housemartins, and partly because he’s got a bit of an "idea" of how he wants The Beautiful South to be.

As a rule, were you to mention DAVE ROTHERAY, you'd normally think of the musical half of one of the most successful British songwriting partnerships since Lennon & McCartney: for by day the affable and totally likeable Yorkshireman writes the melodies behind Paul Heaton's acerbic lyrical swipes in The Beautiful South.
However, what few people realise is that on the quiet, Dave is also a very accomplished lyricist, who's been (literally) writing songs in his bedroom over the past few years and in recent times has linked up with under-rated chanteuse and famous daughter of Joe, Sam Brown to form HOMESPUN.

Recorded last year while The Beautiful South took a sabbatical, Homespun is a low-key collaboration between the band's Dave Rotheray and Sam Brown, a great vocalistwho has long been in need of better material and who's currently part of Jools Holland's touring outfit.
Dave Rotheray, writer and guitarist for The Beautiful South, on hiatus to pursue more personal material, decided Sam was just the voice for him.
It's ther perfect marriage - Rotheray's quirky lyrics (he's responsible for such twisted hits as 'Rotterdam' and 'Perfect Ten' after all) - courting the sweeter than cola cubes voice of Brown.

 Beautiful South: Article
Formed from the remnants of the breakup by the Housemartins, another cynical band, albeit with a more political bent, singer/songwriter Heaton, along with Housemartin drummer Dave Hemingway started the Beautiful South in 1989 in their hometown of Hull, a gray, working- class city in the north of England.
With guitarist/songwriter Rotheray, bassist Sean Welch, drummer David Stead, and vocalist Brianna Corrigan, the South presented a more expansive musical playing field than what was offered in the Housemartins.
Written about England's Page 3 girls, women who appear topless on the third page of some London tabloids, Heaton and Rotheray's intention was to attack the industry that supports it, not the women themselves, but mixed messages in the song reflected otherwise.

Homespun Featuring Dave Rotheray and Sam Brown: Press Release
This project was a purely recreational venture, recorded at home with a few close musical friends, and done without any intention of commercial release.
It became clear that these songs required a singer who could do them justice, and the notion began to develop that this project, embarked upon purely for its own sake, could turn into an album.
Best known for her classic single 'Stop', and possessed of a voice capable of breaking your heart and super-gluing it back together all at the same time, Sam was the perfect choice.

Homespun Effortless Cool Single Review - SoundsXP
For P.D. Heaton and his Housemartins drummer Dave Hemingway the transition from Marxist pop to darkly caustic, tongue-in-cheek MOR proved to be a rewarding one; The Beautiful South, bagged handfuls of hit singles and number one albums and their 1995 singles collection 'Carry On Up The Charts' became the third fastest-selling album of its time.
Nonetheless, here it is. Homespun is a collaboration between Rotheray, a wide variety of experienced session musicians and eighties starlet Sam Brown, who gives a voice to Rotheray's lyrics.
It's easily as good as anything Rotheray has produced at his very best and suggests that both he and the Beautiful South could still one day suprise us again with something truly special.
