BBC - Classic Rock/Pop Review - Dave Thompson, Cream - The World's First Supergroup (book)
Hastily assembled in time for this May's monumentally over-subscribed Royal Albert Hall reunion gigs, Thompson's book struggles to make a compelling story of the meteoric rise and disintegration of the power trio who re-wrote the rule book for every gigging band that followed.
Given that Cream existed for barely more than two years, context has to be drawn upon, and the author does a fine job of sketching in the background detail of a UK music scene full to the brim with great r 'n' b acts all precariously vacillating between blues purity, chart success and jazz respectability.
A professional to the core, Thompson lays out all these well-known facts with precision, but also with a workmanlike style that wildly mixes metaphors and soon wears on the reader.
