Smith had an eventful run in WCW in 1993, engaging in feuds with Sid Vicious and Big Van Vader, who he challenged for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship at Slamboree 1993, and formed a mildly successful alliance with Sting.
Smith returned to the WWF in 1994 as an audience member of the Hart family in a steel cage match between Bret Hart and Owen Hart at SummerSlam 1994.

Smith was angled as the number one contender to the World Heavyweight title, but pre-existing storylines with Vader and Sting made Smith's presence awkward, and he was never able to become popular with the fans as he was expected to.
Smith's success seemed to be on the rise in the WWF prior to his leaving the promotion, and the abrupt manner in which he left one federation and joined another caused him to be lost in the shuffle of talent between the two promotions.
