Friends of Davey and Goliath is a "group of individuals dedicated to bringing the important moral and spiritual messages of Davey and Goliath, the popular children's stop-motion animation television series from the 1960s, back to broadcast television for 21st century children and their parents," said the Rev. Shafer said Friends of Davey and Goliath is also a fund- raising group with the goal of helping to raise $5 million to produce new Davey and Goliath episodes.

The original Davey & Goliath, produced by the United Lutheran Church of America (a previous incarnation of the church) and created by animation legends Art and Ruth Clokey (the team that made Gumby more than just a little green clump of clay), was a staple of Sunday morning TV during the 1960s and 1970s.
And in February, li'l Davey Hansen and his pet pooch (heard only by Davey himself) were "born again" (as one Lutheran publication itself cracked) in a 30-second spot for the secular soda pop Mountain Dew.

Davey gets the point of the story of the crucifixion/resurrection and understands that his late grandmother's spirit will live again in heaven.
Anyway, Davey breaks his foot in a fall, and has to watch the Dog Show on TV (and they had to pre-empt the Charlie Chan movie for a local dog show?)from his bed.

Davey's disapproving father appears on the scene and--after Davey admits that it was wrong to fight--drinks the Dew, intoning: "Let that be a lesson to you." The commercial closes with Tommy asking, "What just happened here?" and a dejected Davey responding: "We got hosed Tommy, we got hosed."
Initially funded by US$1 million from the United Lutheran Church in America, Davey and Goliath was originally produced by stop-frame expert Art Clokey Productions (Gumby) and was distributed to 200 U.S. TV markets for free in 1960.

This heartwarming and funny claymation series featured Davey, a boy of about 10, getting into wacky misadventures with his dutiful dog, Goliath (usually they "got lost" a lot in various milieux) and always learning valuable lessons at the end of the episodes.
While the messages were religious (the Lutheran church paid for the series), you didn't have to be Lutheran, or even Christian to love the show -- even heathen non-Christian kids like me and my neighbors dug the show, this in spite of the fact that our parents used to stare into the t.v.
Nobody who has ever seen Davey and Goliath will ever forget the amiable dog Goliath's anthromorphic cry of, "I don't know, Day-veey!" And, once you've seen this amazing boxed set, neither will you.
