David Anthony Andrew Amess (born 26 March 1952) is a British Member of Parliament for Southend West.
He was born in Plaistow, London to James and Maud Ethel Amess, and raised a Roman Catholic.
The Labour Party won the Basildon seat at that election, so Amess was fortunate that he had moved.

Mr Amess was widely expected to lose the seat to the Labour Party in the general election in 1992, and when he retained it, he went out of his way to proclaim the triumph publicly.
In January 1995, the Basildon newspaper, the Evening Echo, heard that the Amess family, in deciding on a secondary school for their ten-year-old son to attend, had chosen to apply for a place at a school in a town outside the constituency.
