Although David Arnason was born and has lived most of his life in Manitoba, his early literary influences were not the standard ones for Canadian writers.
Arnason said he doesn't limit his writing to only one or two genres, nor does he have a favorite genre.
Arnason said there is no single style in his writing but "a huge gamut of different styles...so that you'd hardly know it was the same person writing.

Prairie Fire Magazine: Review of Books   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
The book is intended as a "celebration of Winnipeg, one of the great but maddening cities of the world" (xii), according to the editors.
Taking as their baseline the idea that "All great cities are known more by their representation in art than by their economic or military greatness" (ix), Arnason and Mackintosh have assembled these excerpts chronologically, to trace how representations of Winnipeg have developed and built upon previous depictions.
An example of this kind of local candour is present in the work of David Currie, who set out from Montreal for Winnipeg as a correspondent for the Montreal Witness to cover the Manitoban settlement rush in the late 1800s.

What appears on the surface as a murder mystery set in Alsatia and the Rhineland, involving international arms dealers, dangerous liaisons, and every other known mystery novel archetype, The Pagan Wall unfolds into layer upon layer of meanings, reversals, historical shifts, philosophical conundrums and linguistic puzzles.
Filled with police inspectors quoting Lacan, the appearance of Martin Heidegger as a character, and whole passages of translated epistemology woven into the dialogue, Arnason's narrative disguises are so seamlessly accomplished that all readers, whether ardent mystery genre fans or exotic deconstructionists, will believe this story to be specifically written for them.
