Rover SD1 development story   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
As with the P6, David Bache did not want a contemporary design; when it came to his new car, he wanted something that was ahead of the game, and with the P10, he decided very early in the development phase that he wanted a hatchback configuration, and that he wanted the Rover to look exclusive.
Whilst Spen King and David Bache worked on Rover's model, initially to be called the P10, Harry Webster's design team worked on the Michelotti-styled Triumph model – codenamed Puma – in consultation with William Towns.
Bache reasoned that he could make a feature out of the fact that the instrument cluster was a unit incorporated as part of this symmetrical dashboard.

 Genesis of the Rover SD1
This drawing was produced by David Bache in the late 1960s, whilst the aborted Rover P8 was still in development.
This gullwing proposal, set in clay during 1969 shows clear Lamborghini Marzal influences - Bache was an enthusiast of gullwing doors - and this can be seen in the picture below, where he had the Solihull engineers design a full-size mock-up of the system.
The two Triumph Puma proposals are on the left - Bache, produced five scale models on the right (the final one chosen to become the SD-1 was the fourth from front).

 The Story of the Maestro
The styling of the car was largely credited to Leyland's then director of styling David Bache, who had been involved in the Range Rover and the SD1 (note the trademark belt line groove both Maestro and SD1 have in common), although the basic Maestro design was the work of Ian Beech.
During this period BL's chief stylist David Bache was replaced by Roy Axe (ex-Rootes and Chrysler).
Bache's view of what LM10 should be clashed with Harold Musgrove's views and in the end, he lost his job.

ADO88 supermini project: David Bache era
Following David Bache's appointment as project leader in 1975, five new styling themes made it to the full-scale model stage (below).
These cars were presented to management in November of that year, forming the basis of a "shoot-out" to decide which would be developed into a production reality.
ADO88's last gasp: by autumn 1977, the car had begun its metamorphosis into LC8, the project which would produce the definitive Metro.

But there are two British vehicles that really did change the face of motoring, almost within 10 years of each other: Issigonis' Mini with its front-wheel drive format and ingenious packaging turned the world of everyday motoring on its head and relegated rear-wheel drive to high performance cars and the luxury sector.
David Bache's 1970 original spawned a whole new automotive sector and created the world's first cross-over vehicle.
With the thin upright posts and the floating roof, the clam shell bonnet and split tailgate they have achieved a body style that is instantly recognizable as a Range Rover, yet moves the style into the 21st century while avoiding the trap of paying slavish homage to Bache's original.

The plan had been kicked off in 1969/70, when Rover and Triumph produced their own big car proposals; of which the Rover version, penned by David Bache, was chosen over the Triumph Puma, as penned by William Towns amongst others.
The formula was a simple yet successful one - marry David Bache design with simple, yet well-honed Spen King engineering to produce a state of the art car...

Indeed there was a plan for a smaller version of the Rover SD1, codenamed SD2, to replace the Triumph Dolomite, and LC10 inherited the David Bache sculpted swage down the side, as seen on the SD1 and the Range Rover.
Roy Axe (ex-Rootes and Chrysler) later replaced David Bache as chief stylist at BL and was none too impressed with the styling of either LM10 or LM11.
A year away from production, the Montego was wheeled into a viewing room and Axe was asked what he thought of it, 'My immediate reaction was to ask if it could be stopped, only to be told my answer was "unacceptable" and that Austin-Rover were committed to the car.

One of his first jobs was to begin a programme to replace the infamous Austin Allegro, which had been a major disaster for BL.
The Maestro, project LC10, was styled by BL's ace design guru David Bache, and was a departure from previous front-wheel drive cars from the company in that it dispensed with the famous Issigonis transmission-in-sump powertrain that had been pioneered in the Mini.
Coupled to the A-Series and R-Series powerplants was a conventional end-on transmission purchased from Volkswagen.
