Bawden, 45, has claimed the title of Michael I since 1990, when he was elected by six people — two of them his mother and late father — meeting in his father’s consignment store in nearby Belvue.
Bawden has claimed to be the rightful leader of the Catholic Church since he was elected by a handful of traditionalist Catholics in 1990.
Bawden, who was born in Oklahoma City in 1959, said he had no plans to lead disaffected Catholics when he and Benns wrote “Will the Catholic Church Survive the 20th Century?” and published it in early 1990.

In studying these books David came to the conclusion that there was something fundamentally wrong with the whole Tradtiionalist movement, which he departed from in late 1983; writing to his friends on this subject.

David Bawden - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bawden's position is that the elections of Pope John XXIII, Pope Paul VI, Pope John Paul I, Pope John Paul II, and Pope Benedict XVI were invalid because they are all modernists.
At the same time David Bawden became convinced of the necessity of a Papal Election and began working with Benns, Leonardi, Ken Mock of America (father of the Conclavist movement), Patrick Henry of Stafford, Texas and several others to accomplish this project for the good of the Church.
David Bawden was never ordained, let alone consecrated a bishop, and no bishops were involved in his election.

In the meantime, after I began to surf the net in December 1998, I learnt that there were other 'elected' claimants, David Bawden as 'Pope Michael I' 1990 and Lucian Pulvermacher as 'Pope Pius XIII' 1998, and that Bawden's claim was the earliest, von Pentz's claim dating from 1994.
However, since I knew little at the time about Bawden, and I was given to understand that von Pentz had been elected by a largish councilium, I thought his claim to be the most credible.
My reasons are to be found at The Sad Misadventures of David Bawden and Theresa Benns Subsequently, I concentrated on the claims of Linus II and Pius XIII.

One problem with Bawden's election as pope is that he isn't ordained--not a priest, not a bishop.
Aggregate with David Bawden's following all those other splinter groups, whether on the right or the left, and you suddenly have thousands of people, perhaps millions, who very easily can be ridiculed and ignored--but who shouldn't be.

Finishing Frank Thomas's "What's the Matter with Kansas" today at lunch, I had almost drifted gently and without obstacle through the book (which stubbornly refuses to find larger meaning to its well-written examination of a very boring and foolish state) before I hit a snag.
In the last chapter, Thomas casually spends some time commenting on a Kansan formerly known as David Bawden, now elected Pope Michael I after a 32 year interregnum of the "true" Catholic Church.
