On 25th March 1971, Bleakley was appointed Minister of Community Relations in the government of Brian Faulkner who wanted to bring in a non-Unionist in order to broaden the base of his administration.
Bleakley served in the Northern Ireland Assembly in 1973-1974, and in the Constitutional Convention from 1975-1976, each time being elected from Belfast East.
Bleakley remained interested and involved in politics, and was a founder member of Peace Pledge Ireland in 1990.

The dedication plaque also had on it a definition of heaven that Lewis had shared with David during one of their walks in Oxford: "Heaven is Oxford lifted and placed in the middle of the County Down." Jeremy and I took pictures of both the building and the bench.
As David was driving us back to Crawfordsburn, he drove us by his own home on Thornhill Road and invited us to come back that evening and join him and his wife, Winnie, for tea.

Bleakley will also chair the group’s board of advice in a role he says will be more strategic and able to use the 20 years of industry experience he has gained in financial planning and advice.
Bleakley will begin with ING in early April and while briefed on the issues within ING he says it is too early to comment on what strategic advice he will be offering the group.
Bleakley signing on with ING represents a return of sorts after the financial planning group founded by him and bearing his name in 1981 was merged with Adviser Investment Services into Partnership Planning in late 2000.

Sometime prior to the fall of 1947, according to Carl Nelson, one of the founders of Elmcrest, "David G. Bleakley, a non-golfer, originally presented his thoughts and ideas to me concerning a new country club and how it would benefit the city of Cedar Rapids'.
Articles of incorporation were drawn up and signed on September 17, 1947, and approved by the Secretary of State on September 17, 1949.
In a statement made July 15, 1993, describing the founding of the Club, Carl Nelson said, "I am forever thankful for the opportunity to help establish Elmcrest from the beginning and to see it grow to the fine Club it is today".
