David Blunkett was born on 6 June 1947 in Sheffield.
According to some sources, David Blunkett went to Sheffield School for the Blind from the age of 4 (although other sources refer to Blunkett attending the Royal Normal College for the Blind in Shrewsbury), Sheffield University and Huddersfield College of Education.
From 1974 to 1979 David Blunkett was a clerk and shop steward at the East Midlands Gas Board (his father had been a Gas Board foreman before he died in a works accident when David was 12).
