David Broder and the Limits of Mainstream Liberalism
Broder himself would quite properly deny this designation of "leftist." But it is true that in the spectrum of opinion of leading syndicated columnists he is on the left.
Broder was also extremely kind to the Reagan/Bush court appointees of the past decade, and raised no objection to the resultant ideological restructuring of the courts.
Broder's most independent moments were his attacks on Reagan's economic program in the years 1981-84, in which he assailed Reagan (and the supportive Democrats) for a damaging policy mix that promised dire consequences.

David Broder: Democracy Derailed - A Book Review by Scott London
David Broder, the veteran Washington Post reporter, describes the initiative as a new form of government, one that takes much of its energy from the American public's disdain of politics and distrust of politicians.
As Broder points out, "these players have learned that the initiative is a far more efficient way of achieving their ends than the cumbersome process of supporting candidates for public office and then lobbying them to pass or sign the measures they seek."
Broder does acknowledge some, if not all, of the benefits of the initiative process, and he is generally fair-minded in presenting both sides of the case, but he nevertheless insists that the process is seriously jeopardizing our democratic future.

Porkbusters: David Broder and the (Daryl) Levinson thesis
As David Mayhew argued many years ago, the primary interest of members of Congress is being re-elected, which, of course, has all sorts of implications in terms of campaign finance.
Broder is evoking the classic Madisonian vision of legislators who are basically virtuous and "above politics." That has not described Amerirican politics for over 200 years.
Could Broder possibly believe that it would be better to have a Senate that included the virtuous and in some ways admirable Chafee if it came at the price of the Senate's remaining in Republican hands (and therefore completely unwilling to engage in any significant oversight of their Republican masters in the Executive)?

Broder is a little different than most of the liberal and leftist commentators at newspapers, television stations and especially the blogosphere in that he is old enough to have a conscience and to realize when the "movement" is being more destructive than helpful, both to itself and others.
As nice as it is to see Broder call for an apology, the thoughtless and bloodthirsty outnumber the responsible people in his party by about 10:1 right now, and therefore I expect this article to register with the approximate percussive effect of a tree falling in the forest when nobody is around to listen.

Broder's first piece of evidence is a negative characterization of Helms's 1984 re-election campaign by another reporter whom he describes as "one of the most evenhanded reporters I have ever known." People who consider David Broder an authority on evenhandedness will find that convincing.
