ReadingGroupGuides.com - David Copperfield by Charles Dickens
David Copperfield's time at Murdstone and Grinby's warehouse, his schooling at Salem House, and his relationship with Dora all have their bases in Dickens's own life.
Made aware of the vicissitudes of life, Copperfield also learns of the cyclical patterns of life as "David Copperfield of Blunderstone" is reborn at his aunt's as "Copperfield Trotwood"; the barbarous schooling of Mr.
Given the intimate connection between the lives of Copperfield and his author, it is little wonder that Dickens considered this book his "favourite child." And it is little wonder, given its vast array of memorable characters and its brilliant treatment of the quest for self-knowledge, that Copperfield is Dickens's best loved and most quoted novel.

Enjoying a humour that never becomes caricature, the reader shares David's affection for the eccentric Betsey Trotwood and her protege Mr Dick, and smiles with the narrator at the trials he endures in his love for the delightfully silly Dora.
The book tells the story of Copperfield's life, from his post-humous birth, his pretty but impractical mother's re-marriage to a dominating husband, his being sent to boarding school, to his marriage to a young lady similar to his mother, and then, after her death, his marriage to the sensible daughter of a solicitor.
Also it is striking how little David is taken by the emotions and sufferings to learn, in the end, forgiveness and real love (the former for his dear friend Steerforth and love for his beloved, smart Agnes).
