Fans of Daniels’ opera singing revelled in two arias from Handel’s Semele: “Your tuneful Voice” which displayed the singer’s lovely lyrical middle voice and exquisite embellishments; and the faster aria “Despair no more shall wound me”, a welcome display of Daniels’ coloratura abilities.

Daniels and Ogden have really turned this program into a cohesive vision full of simply beautiful music wonderfully realized through voice and guitar - probably the best such coupling I have heard since Kathleen Battle and Christopher Parkening's "Pleasures of Their Company" more than a decade ago.
David Daniels is internationally celebrated for his resurrecting the original countertenor roles in Handel operas and his voice has more power on the opera stage in this unfamiliar vocal range than those many regular tenors.

David Daniels seems to be the current leader of the opera world's March of the Falsettos--and with good reason: he's one of the first countertenors with enough beef in his voice to sound convincing in the heroic castrato roles of Handel's operas.
It is hard to imagine that there could be a finer recital disc of Handel's arias than this one reflecting the exquisite taste and powerful talent of David Daniels...unless of course, you count his splendid follow-up disc of Handel's lesser known oratorio arias released in 2002 (also strongly recommended).
David Daniels, being currently "the" countertenor in demand, was a logical choice to start.

This disc should have been titled Countertenor Escapes Baroque, for the gifted David Daniels here nods to the Baroque repertory to which his voice type has largely been confined, but also plunges forthrightly into core Romantic and modern song styles (as he had so successfully into the classical period in his Sento Amor collection).
Daniels may not be completely comfortable in the French mélodies, but he really makes a meal of the Schubert and Beethoven lieder and the Vaughan Williams songs, sounding fully at home in the repertory and displaying a sensitivity to the text that sheds new light on these lyric gems.
David Daniels: Certainly some great work was done before people like Brian Asawa or myself came along, but I think there are voices out there now that are more accessible to the average opera goers, than, say, Drew Minter's, Randall Wong's or Jeffrey Gall's.
