Duncan Worried About Enron Early On NEW YORK -- David Duncan, the former Enron auditor and star witness in Andersen's obstruction of justice trial, testified Tuesday that he was concerned last fall about the bankrupt energy giant's sketchy accounting.
Duncan said he feared Enron's accounting practices could lead to a possible federal investigation and even litigation, and therefore he implicitly encouraged his staff to shred documents unaware of any illegality, The Associated Press reported.
Duncan said he did not explicitly order the mass shredding and deleting that was carried out by the company's audit team, but said he gave employees a reminder on Oct. 23 about Andersen's document retention policy that prompted them to shred documents.

David Douglas Duncan: One Life, A Photographic Odyssey was curated by Roy Flukinger, senior curator of the Ransom Center's Photography and Film Collection; Lisa Royse, curator for the LBJ Library & Museum; and Liz Murray, an archivist in the Ransom Center's manuscript collection.
In 1968, Duncan flew straight from the besieged outpost to hand-deliver the negatives for the photographs that were to comprise I Protest!, his broadside denunciation of the war.

Duncan, the former Andersen partner who oversaw the auditing of the bankrupt energy trader's books, testified Wednesday at the accounting firm's federal criminal trial in Houston that government investigators told him he could be charged with various crimes, including obstruction and fraud.
But Duncan also said that while he was talking to federal investigators, he began thinking he might be guilty of a crime for directing staff to comply with the firm's document retention policy and destroy Enron-related documents in the process.
In fact, Duncan thought at the time it was "entirely appropriate" for Andersen employees to destroy documents until the firm received a subpoena notifying it that Enron was the subject of a government investigation.

David James Duncan is able to convey very complex ideas in the vernacular of the common man. Which is just the way I like my complex ideas expalined.
It seems to be a lost art to tell a meaningful story with humor and compassion but Duncan manages to make both "River" and "Brothers" not only important to read but highly entertaining.
