 VH1.com : David Essex : Biography
Essex went through 10 flop singles, and decided to try acting instead -- by then, he was juggling appearances in small productions and the responsibilities of a marriage (and pregnant wife), and earning his living driving trucks and cleaning windows.
Essex's producer on all of these singles and the accompanying albums was Jeff Wayne, a transplant from America who had some composer and arranger credits associated with West End theater and commercials.
This was one of the reasons, beyond his voice and talent, that Essex's early singles, though essentially 70's teen pop, seemed to command such attention and respect from the rock press, far outstripping the impact of earlier practioners such as the Herd and most of his contemporary rivals.

By 1980, David Essex seemed more comfortable on the theater stage (from whence, to all intents and purposes, he'd come) than in fulfilling his recording contract.
The mood of the album is generally closer to the "Rock On"/"Lamplight" ideal that his old fans still yearned for than anything he'd done in recent years, with "Swim Against the Flow" emerging as another of the portentous epics that Essex is occasionally prone to come out with.
Equally fascinatingly, Essex's vocal is pitched perfectly to show how much David Bowie, too, lifted from Ray Davies.

Another cover, Travis Pritchett [+]'s "Tell Him No," is especially persuasive, its lyric drawing such emotion out of Essex's voice that it overcomes even the heavy effects and canyon-like echo with which his tones are normally swamped -- yes, Virginia, the boy can sing.

It revolves around Stuart (David Coffey), who isn't really in it: He died in a boating accident before it opens and is only glimpsed in silent home movies.

I suppose it's part of the point that none of these men is as lively and fun as Stuart was: Lawless Heart is about what happens when the life of the party leaves and the others must suddenly fill the vacuum.
