David Fabricius - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
David Fabricius (March 9, 1564 - May 7, 1617) was responsible for two major discoveries in the early days of telescopic astronomy.
Fabricius made his first mark on history by discovering the first known periodic variable star (as opposed to cataclysmic variables, such as novas and supernovas), Mira, in August of 1596.
Besides these two discoveries, little else is known about David Fabricius except his unusual manner of death: after denouncing a local goose thief from the pulpit, the accused man struck him in the head with a shovel and killed him.

Johann Fabricius died on 19 March 1616, and his father, who did not pursue sunspot observations, was killed the following year by an enraged parsoner he had attacked from the pulpit over a stolen goose.
However, the priority controversy between Galileo and Scheiner took center stage and the contribution of the Fabricius was all but forgotten until a hundred years later, when a copy of Fabricius' small pamphlet was rediscovered and publicized in 1723.

 AAVSO: History Of Mira's Discovery
David Fabricius (1564_1617), an amateur astronomer and native of Friesland, The Netherlands, is recognized as the first to have discovered a long period variable in 1596, later called o (omicron) Ceti by Johann Bayer in 1603.
Fabricius (Wolf 1877) observed the star from August 3, when he had used it as a comparison star for the determination of the position of the planet he assumed to be Mercury (later identified by Argelander, 1869, as more probably Jupiter), until August 21, when it had increased from magnitude 3 to magnitude 2.
Fabricius, a minister, had been murdered by a peasant whom he had cited from the pulpit as having stolen one of the minister's geese (Poggendorff 1863)!

 Maps of Ostfriesland from MrJumbo
In 1589 David Fabricius (1564-1617), from Esens, drew a map of Ostfriesland.
Fabricius also uses the name “Seerim” for the area that on other maps, to this day, is called “Seriem.” Frisian and English are close relatives, and in English the word “rim” has persisted to the present, where it has more or less dropped from use in German and Dutch.
By the time Fabricius gets down to the southern part of the map, his geographical accuracy gets a bit dodgy, but he clearly knows the names of many towns and villages, and their rough relation to each other.

 Mira, Omicron Ceti
Mira was the second variable and the first pulsating one to be discovered, on August 13, 1596 by David Fabricius (1564-1617), a disciple of Tycho Brahe and amateur astronomer, and then regarded as a nova because it appeared and faded from view later.
In 1603, it was seen, measured and cataloged by Johann Bayer in his Uranometria as star of 4th magnitude, and labelled Omicron Ceti by him.
R.H. Allen (1899) reports that its discoverer, Fabricius, observed it again on February 15, 1609.
