David Fincher is one of many hot directors (among them Antoine Fuqua, Gore Verbinski, and Spike Jonze) who received his start directing innovative music videos for Propaganda Films in the 1980s.
Fincher was brought to the project late in its life (after a whopping 30+ scripts had been recycled), and due to his inexperience and the project’s enormous mounting costs faced constant interference from 20th Century Fox, who were increasingly bothered by the film’s troubles.
Fincher’s latest is “Zodiac,” based on Robert Graysmith’s autobiographical accounting of his hunt for the San Francisco Bay Area ‘Zodiac killer’ in the 70s.

David Fincher - Films as director:, Other films:
Using darkness as a metaphor for evil and danger is hardly original—it is the entire basis of film noir, for a start—but Fincher brings to the banal equation a degree of emotional intensity that reinvigorates it.
But Fincher found himself mired in a hopelessly jinxed project that had already chewed up and spat out two previous directors—not to mention a cinematographer, a small army of writers, and a lot of studio money.
Fincher talks of being "drawn to things that begin to dismantle the architecture, not of movies, but of the pact that a movie that's responsible entertainment makes with an audience." Such disruptive tactics are never likely to make for commercial smash-hits.

 David Fincher
Fincher cultivated a healthy respect for big-budget filmmaking as a teenager when he landed a dream job at Industrial Light and Magic.
Fincher also found a place directing lavish commercials for corporations like Nike, Levi's, Pepsi, and Coca-Cola; this profession has since sheltered Fincher from the whims of the studios, giving him time to choose his projects and negotiate a decent amount of control over them.
Fincher proved his aptitude for moody set pieces with his next film, Seven (1995), a drama about two detectives who track a heaven-bent serial killer who chooses his victims and their deaths according to the seven deadly sins.

Most moviegoers became familiar with the name David Fincher after the release of “Alien 3.” Hitting harsh criticism by critics and fans alike, many suggested director David Fincher’s visual style were too consummate and fast-paced as a result of his origins in the music video industry.
And although David Fincher is the first to admit that “Alien 3” had its fair share of problems, it lay the foundation for what was to come.
Producer David Britten Prior also recalls the scenario and adds that he was glad, Fincher and he were in a similar mindset when it came to finalizing the packaging for the release.

David Fincher sometimes slips into theaters for early screenings of his movies and listens for the gasps and laughs.
But far more disturbing for Fincher is the aftermath, seeing a killer take stock of his work, wash his hands, mop the floor, plan the rest of his day.
Of course, the very fact of David Fincher's own normalcy tends to support his basic theory of life and alienation and art: "As much as people pretend 'I fit in, I understand, I get the rules,' there are always times spent away from that where you go, 'I thought I knew.

On the surface David Fincher’s Panic Room is typical Hollywood fare compared to the noir-ish, ultra-violence of his polemical last film, Fight Club.
In almost any other director’s hands, Panic Room would be an unwatchable catastrophe, but Fincher’s showy directing style, which employs the camera as an eerily omniscient narrator, drags the conventional story across a bed of nails, giving the film jagged edges that aren’t present in the script.
Director David Fincher, who is as close to an auteur as Hollywood will allow, signed Nicole Kidman to play the role of Meg Altman in Panic Room.

Zodiac Director David Fincher adapts a tapeless workflow for the big screen
Fincher insists the whole process was fairly simple and straightforward in most respects, even though many of the tools his team used were still evolving and being tailored to his specific needs as the project got underway.
There were, obviously, hiccups along the way, and at press time, Fincher and his colleagues did not have their final product in hand, but the director says developing this process was more than worth it in terms of letting him work the way he has wanted to work for many years, sans videotape.
For instance, Fincher wanted to have the option to delete takes on set, despite the fact that the hard drive system he was using was designed specifically to prevent image deletion during production.

Fincher has always worn his influences on his sleeve, from Hitchcock to Kubrick to Peckinpah, and while all of the above are referenced in Panic Room, the film is mostly a successful homage to the Master of Suspense himself.
David Koepp's tight script allows the director to get right down to business: Once descended upon by a trio of a burglars, Jodie Foster's Meg Altman is pitted against her captors in a variety of set piece situations, each more nail-biting than the last.
Though Fincher employs his usual bag of digital tricks to accentuate the spaces of Meg's lavish brownstone, the flourishes never seem gratuitous; the director doesn't forget that simple juxtapositions of glances, framings, and angles convey much more fear and dread than three-dimensional computer animation.
