O'Reilly Network -- An Interview with David Flanagan
David has just finished a major update to JavaScript: The Definitive Guide, 4th Edition, and we recently spoke with him about what's new in the latest edition, the state of JavaScript, and how Netscape has improved its support for Web standards.
Flanagan: I'm sure that its use has taken a temporary hit along with the rest of the dot-com economy, but I think that in the larger picture the use of JavaScript will continue to grow for some time.
Flanagan: The major new feature of JavaScript version 1.5 (which corresponds to version 3 of the ECMAScript standard) is exception handling with the Java-style try/catch/finally statement and the throw statement.

JS Online: Court pulls plug on Oak Creek power project
Flanagan's decision was a setback for Wisconsin Energy's plan to construct what would be the state's largest power-plant complex, and a significant victory for opponents of the coal plants, led by S.C. Johnson & Son Inc. of Racine.
Flanagan sided with opponents in finding that the commission failed to follow the state's energy priorities law, which requires the commission to consider cleaner ways of generating power, from energy efficiency to renewable sources such as wind turbines.
Flanagan, however, said it was improper for the commission to approve the project before all necessary environmental permits had been obtained.

David Flanagan's approach, which combines tutorials and examples with easy-to-use syntax guides and object references, suits the typical programmer's requirements nicely.
As Flanagan says, JavaScript and its related subjects are very complex in their pure forms.
Though he does not cover server-side APIs, Flanagan has chosen to separate coverage of core JavaScript (all the keywords, general syntax and utility objects such as Array) from coverage of client-side JavaScript, which includes objects, such as History and Event, that have to do with Web browsers and users' interactions with them.
